Q: Will using my personal phone for MFA cause my personal phone to be subject to open records requests ?

A: Boone County's Board Attorney states: Generally speaking, personal cell phones used for work purposes ARE subject to open records, but only for the content of the business itself. Personal content on the personal device would never be subject to open records. So, in the specific case of a code being sent to a personal device for MFA, only the code itself would be subject to open records and NOT anything personal on the device.

Q: What happens if I do not want to use my personal device for MFA?

A: Immediately - nothing; however, in the spring of 2023, Boone County employees not using a device for MFA will only have access to resources requiring MFA while on the Boone County network.

In working through the process, we have discovered that a Google Voice phone number created with a personal Gmail account will work for MFA. If you would like more information on a Google Voice phone number, please click here.

The Authenticator App will also work on a district Chromebook if that method is preferred over using a personal device.

Q: What verification options do we have?

A: Text message, phone call or authenticator app

Q: How frequently will I have to provide a multifactor (use my phone) to log in?

A: Every 30 days you will be prompted to re-enter a verification code or any time you are logging into a device for the first time.

Q: What will require multifactor authentication?

A: All programs using Office 365 single sign-on (ex. Infinite Campus, Outlook, Teams).

Q: Can I use my office phone (direct line) for multifactor authentication?

A: You can use your desk phone if you have a direct line that can be dialed from outside of the district; however, the preferred method is using a personal device. Choosing to use a desk phone will mean you cannot authenticate when away from the school building.

Q: What if I cannot get a signal on my phone?

A: If signal strength is an issue, using the Microsoft Authenticator app should solve that problem. Both Google and Microsoft options will work even when your phone is not connected to the internet. A code or push notification will be sent to your personal device for authentication.

Q: What if I get a new phone number or lose my phone?

A: The Technology Department is encouraging each staff member to set up a secondary multifactor option. Security information options can be updated at any time at the following locations:

Microsoft: https://aka.ms/mfasetup

Google: https://myaccount.google.com/security?hl=en

Q: Where do I change the number I want to use for multifactor authentication?

Q: What happens if I leave my personal device at home?
