Teaching using games is not a new practice. These days however the design of the games has moved into the digital era. As our classrooms are becoming more digitized, I decided to research game based learning in the classroom. I set out to explore whether math based games computer games were really helping kids learn, or were we, as teachers, just giving our students "something fun to do" by playing online math games. What I discovered in my research really surprised me! Researches points out that gaming in the classroom can have a profound influence in developing character traits such as perseverance, teamwork, and problem solving among other things. Further, game based learning in the classroom has many implications that apply to the structure of how the brain stores and retrieves memory. When research based games are used as a tool for learning, both struggling students and high achievers can reach higher levels of cognition.
Here I am providing a list of math games that are research based and support classroom learning. Students can use the links listed to play the games. Parents be sure to monitor your child when they are online. Some websites contain ads.
