Computers, Software, & Peripherals
A powerful desktop computer is available in a RR Building graduate office (use RAPT 116 Computer Use calendar to reserve in-person or for remote access) with a suite of GIS and Statistical Software installed (R, ArcGIS Desktop, etc.).
Note that personal files are not saved on this computer, and work must be saved to your own media.
If a Boise State-owned computer is not working, email the RRC Research Center Administrator with your name, the date it stopped working, the make and model, the serial #, the room # it is in, and a detailed description of the problem.
RAPT 119 and SCNC 146B computer labs have computers available for use whenever classes are not being held.
ArcGIS Online is available to all currently enrolled students on any capable computer (64 MB RAM minimum; 256 MB RAM minimum recommended). Go to this link > Click Boise State Enterprise Login > Sign in using your usual Boise State credentials.
Send an email to HelpDesk@boistate.edu to request an Adobe Acrobat Pro license.
See OIT Services A-Z for information about software available to campus.
Printers are available in all graduate offices for low volume printing. A copier and plotter (large format printer) are available in the Department of Biological Sciences mail room.
All Travelers:
Check/update your emergency contact information on file (employee link / student link).
Per State of Idaho Travel Policy, expenses related to travel cannot be reimbursed prior to completion of travel. This includes registration fees and airfare that are often made months in advance. Thus, students should ask advisors to use their p-card for these early travel expenses to prevent long-term personal obligations.
Students Employed by Boise State:
Travel Authorization Info Form-RRC should be submitted as soon as estimated travel dates are known. Wait to receive confirmation from RRC admin that your Travel Authorization was approved before incurring any travel expenses. Travel to advance your graduate research, such as training or to present research at a conference, is scheduled as work-related travel with a Travel Authorization. See Introduction to Employee Travel.
Submit an RRC Reimbursement Request (Travel) Form ASAP after travel for reimbursements via Expense Report submission. See Introduction to Expense Reimbursement.
Personal time may be combined with work/educational time during travel, but certain protocols must be followed during purchasing that are outlined on the TA Info Form-RRC and on the RRC Employee Resources website.
Students Not Employed by Boise State:
Student Travel and Field Trip Expectations and Consent Agreement should be completed for any overnight travel - send to RRC admin to keep on file.
Authorized Volunteer Agreement must be completed and sent to RRC admin for any non-employee students or students off contract during the summer who are driving university-owned or university-rented vehicles.
Submit an RRC Reimbursement Request (Travel) Form ASAP after travel for reimbursements via student payments.
Before proceeding with any of these steps, consult your advisor and/or RRC administration.
GAship International Insurance Coverage: The university's Graduate Assistant insurance plan has On-Call International as part of the plan. Access the On-Call International policy information online at: Travel assistance | Aetna Student Health and the certificate of coverage online at: Boise State University - Grad Assists - On Call Certificate of Coverage. Specific questions should be directed to the insurance provider. If you are employed as a Boise State GA for a spring semester and the following fall semester, this coverage extends through the summer between semesters. In addition to this coverage, you may want to seek additional insurance (following) to cover any potential gaps.
Work/Conference Time Insurance Coverage: After securing an employee Travel Authorization (TA) or Authorized Volunteer Agreement, complete a Foreign Travel Submission for international emergency insurance. Notify Risk Management & Insurance (RMI@boisestate.edu) if your overall travel dates or personal travel dates changed from your original plan in the TA (for employees). Specify any personal days in the RMI form.
Personal Time Insurance Coverage: You have the option to get emergency assistance insurance (such as emergency evacuation) and international medical coverage for personal travel days through Boise State's Center for Global Engagement. To request, email AmiTain@boisestate.edu at CGE. Identify yourself as a student with the RRC and acknowledge that you are aware that your student account will be charged directly for the insurance.
Ensure you have an up-to-date passport that expires at least 6 months after the last date of your upcoming travel. Students and employees can apply for passports and have photos taken at a low cost through the Center for Global Engagement.
Obtain visas or other paperwork as necessary. See the U.S. Department of State travel website.
Enroll in the STEP program at state.step.gov to be located in emergencies and get up-to-date destination information.
Submit an International Handcarry Form (preferably months in advance) to exportcontrols@boisestate.edu if transporting any university-owned or university-controlled electronics anywhere internationally. Maintain control of university property and devices, avoid accessing files remotely while abroad, and store any necessary scientific, technical, and/or sensitive information on an encrypted flash drive on your person rather than on your device.
You are required to consult with Export Control before travel can be approved to embargoed, sanctioned, or prohibited countries and/or when your funder or scope of work includes military, space, or intelligence. Visit Export Controls or contact exportcontrols@boisestate.edu to further discuss policy compliance.
If the destination country is Level 3 or 4 on the State Department’s Travel.State.Gov travel advisories website (measuring health and unrest risk), then there are two forms required for the traveler to complete and submit with the TA (can get from COAS office, specify if student or employee).
You are responsible for your own health. The university urges that you become aware of known diseases, illnesses, and outbreaks and consider recommended/required vaccinations in destination coutry(ies) as recommended by the CDC and World Health Organization. Consult with your primary provider or a hospital network’s travel medicine department.
Check into international cell phone options, technology compatibility with outlets, recommended or required vaccinations, customs medication prohibitions, etc. before travel.
The Raptor Research Center is here for you.
