NOTE: You must be set up for direct deposit through your student account to receive stipends, fellowships, and departmental scholarships—this is different and separate from HR/payroll direct deposit setup.
If you are not set up for direct deposit or not sure, follow these instructions to set up and update direct deposit to avoid payment delays. See also Student Financial Services Direct Deposit FAQ.
Trustee Fellowship in Raptor Biology: An endowment through the University Foundation provides fellowship awards for M.S. Raptor Biology students during their first and second year summers while they are not receiving income as TAs. The RRC emails application invitations each spring to eligible students. Awarded amounts vary according to annual fund status and the current number of raptor biology students.
McCaslin for M.S. Raptor Biology: The Robert Roy McCaslin Memorial Fund for Graduate Assistantships was set up in 1988 with a scholarship agreement to support graduate assistants in Raptor Biology as well as other specific programs. The RRC emails application invitations each spring to eligible students. Awarded amounts vary according to annual fund status and the current number of raptor biology students.
RRC Student Allocations: Each M.S. Raptor Biology student has access to $1,200 from the RRC to use for travel to present their research at conferences or professional meetings. This funding can be used all at once or for multiple travel events. Coordinate with your advisor about when and how to use your RRC student allocation, as they may also be able to assist you with faculty allocations.
Raptor Research and Conservation Excellence Fund: The RRC receives gifts through this fund specifically to support raptor research, conservation and education. Your advisor can inquire about availability of funding.
The RRC offers these fellowships of up to $1,200 for Masters and PhD students in programs other than the M.S. Raptor Biology program. In the application, you are asked to provide a short summary of how your research relates to, or benefits, raptor ecology and conservation (e.g., sagebrush restoration supports raptor prey, wind turbine research relates to raptor flyways). When applications open in the fall, notifications are sent to COAS, the Graduate College, and RRC Instagram and the news should appear in the Campus Update.
Department of Biological Sciences graduate fellowships may have broader eligibility than just the M.S. Raptor Biology program. Contact the Department of Biological Sciences for information on how to apply.

Conference-Specific Travel Awards: Many professional organizations have opportunities for students to apply for travel awards. Check the organization's website and conference webpages for opportunities such as the RRF's James R. Koplin Memorial Travel Grant, awarding up to ~$500. Applying for these awards first is recommended to avoid unnecessary expenses, as an award may include free membership or conference registration.
COAS Graduate Student Travel Support Program: The College of Arts and Sciences provides an opportunity for students to apply for travel funds of up to ~$500 in order to present their scholarly work at academic societies or professional meetings.
COAS funding must be matched by contributions to student travel from a department, and RRC student allocations fulfill this requirement. Please coordinate with RRC administration when applying if you’d like the RRC to match the requested COAS funds.
Application Form Guidelines if RRC Funds Will Be Used Along With COAS Support (do one of the following):
Enter Raptor Research Center for “Department,” and enter appropriate amount for “Amount of financial support provided by the department.”
Either enter your home department for Department, enter $0 for “Amount of financial support provided by the department,” and enter appropriate $ amount and “Raptor Research Center" for “Amount of financial support provided by other sources”
There are multiple deadlines for different rounds of these awards, so pay attention to which deadline you need to meet based on the time of year of your actual travel.
ASBSU Travel Grant Requests: Individual awards for student travel to events can be up to ~$400 each. Note that you need to wait until sometime in July to apply for this, once the button on the linked webpage has the dates for the upcoming academic year. Read over all information carefully. ASBSU will specifically only reimburse expenses made directly by the student with personal funds, supported by careful records.
The Raptor Research Center is here for you.
