MSE 479 Undergraduate research experience

Through MSE 479, students work in a campus research lab under the guidance of a mentor. This can be paid or unpaid work. During the duration of the class, the student is asked to plan and design a project, and complete the experiments, data analysis, and other activities to identify results. To support the learning in this, assignments related to ethics and continued learning are conducted.

If you are considering a future in research or going to graduate school, this course is a great option for you! MSE 479 is offerred every semester, including summer. To enroll in this course, you will need a permission number. To get the permission number, email Jessica Economy.

I'm already doing research

If you are already working in a lab or with a faculty member, whether in MSE or another program, talk to your mentor about how you might be able to apply your research to this requirement

I want to do research

If you aren't currently involved in a research lab and want to connect to work towards completing MSE 479, check our our Get Experience page

MSE 493 Internship

In MSE 493, a student completes an internship at a company for credit. Once an internship had been offered, a student will need to complete the application for internship for credit through the career center website.

To receive the grade in MSE 493, along with the work completed for the internship, students will need to submit a final summary and reflection, a literature survey, and an ethics assignment, all relevant to the internship.

Internships are one of the best ways to gain experience and prepare for jobs after graduation!

P.S. Go to the career fair every semester!

ENGR 380 Engineering Design

Student who have completed MSE 280 can contact the instructor of ENGR 380 to receive a permission number. ENGR 380 is part of the engineering design core

This is a great option for students who see a path in industry, working in engineering deisgn and offers a more robust design experience

VIP Courses

VIP courses, while not automatically counted toward the requirement, can be considered. If approved by the MSE program, instead of VIP 400, students will enroll in VIP 401 and complete the course requirements included in MSE 479.
