Transfer Credit
MSE TRANSFER CREDIT APPROVAL POLICY AND PROCESS
Students sometimes choose to augment their program at Boise State with courses taken from other colleges and universities or with previous experience. While we support this choice, there are some constraints of which you should be aware. Review the information below to insure these classes will apply to your degree progress.
For students currently enrolled at Boise State
If you are planning to take a course outside of Boise State University as part of your MSE curriculum, please be aware that not all external courses meet the learning objectives established by the MSMSE. You must submit a Transfer Credit Evaluation request prior to enrolling in classes outside of Boise State University; by doing so, you will verify that the course is a valid substitute and will count as credit toward your major. Once you have successfully completed the class, complete the process by submitting an unofficial transcript using the Transfer Credit Evaluation form.
A separate submittal is required for each request. You will receive an e-mail indicating whether or not your request was approved. This e-mail will validate you’ve met pre-requisite course requirements and can be used in requests for permission numbers for follow-on courses.
For classes taken prior to attending Boise State
If you’ve taken courses at another school, it’s likely that many of those courses were not considered as direct equivalents to our courses by University transcript evaluators. In some cases, we can arrange for your engineering courses to be accepted as substitutions for ours. If you feel a class should count towards one of our requirements, submit a Transfer Credit Evaluation request. Courses that were taken prior to attending Boise State and have been evaluated as direct equivalents by the university do not need to be re-evaluated.
A separate submittal is required for each course. You will receive an e-mail indicating whether or not your request was approved. When approved, this e-mail will validate you’ve met pre-requisite course requirements and can be used in requests for permission numbers for follow-on MSE courses.
TRANSFER CREDITS
The Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering can approve transfer courses for the following:
Courses taken to fulfill Materials Science and Engineering Major and Minor degree requirements. These do not include courses for University Foundations (UF) or Disciplinary Lens (DL).
Courses taken to fulfill pre-requisite requirements for MSE courses. This applies to all students enrolling in MSE courses, regardless of major.
Courses accepted by the by MSMSE are NOT automatically accepted for other academic programs (e.g. a Math class will still need to be evaluated by the Mathematics department to apply it to an Applied Math minor).
PLEASE NOTE:
Upper-division (300- and 400-level) MSE required courses are considered critical to the MSE curriculum and must be completed at Boise State.
If you have previously taken the non-BOISE STATE course at BOISE STATE and did not receive at least a C- in the course, your pre-approval request may be rejected. Please state any extenuating circumstances in your request so that information can be considered in the evaluation.
If the non-BOISE STATE course you are considering is an online course, the course syllabus must clearly document that a proctor is required, either from the instructor, department, or University offering the course. You must include course Proctor information in your Pre-Approval Evaluation form.
ONLINE COURSES
If you are planning on taking an online course as credit towards your Materials Science and Engineering major or minor degree requirements, you must obtain written approval from the Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering prior to taking the course. Exceptions to this policy are:
Courses you are taking to fulfill University DL or UF requirements
Online courses offered by Boise State University
To request an Online Course Pre-Approval through the MSMSE please fill out an (link to form) with documentation attached. You will receive an e-mail indicating whether or not your request was approved. A separate submittal is required for each request.
SECOND DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS
If you’ve earned an academic degree and you are obtaining a second undergraduate degree from us, it’s likely that you’ve met most if not all of our foundational requirements. In addition, we can apply to waive some of our courses when you have taken the appropriate equivalent courses for your previous degree. Please send an email to Megan Frary (meganfrary@boisestate.edu) to begin this process.
CLEP AND OTHER PRIOR LEARNING
If you have experiential learning in a particular area, you can request credit for courses in that area. We don’t offer this for mechanical engineering; however, many of our students have successfully obtained credits for language and other courses. You may also be able to obtain College Level Examination (CLEP) credits for prior learning. Before pursuing these credits, talk with your advisor to make sure the courses for which you are obtaining credit will help you in your degree progress.
