The Computing PhD Program expects students to provide their own functional laptop for personal and academic work.
The Computing program currently owns and manages several laptops, and these are reserved for first-year students on Computing GA appropriated funding who are entering the program without a research advisor. Eligible Computing-funded GAs must request a laptop via the New Student Intake form.
Students are required to complete a Laptop Checkout Form at the time of check-out. Students must also acknowledge that they have received the equipment in good condition and accept full liability for damage or loss. This includes concealed or unreported damage upon return. Any and all personal files, history, photos, information, etc., must be removed from the devices upon return. There should be no expectation that any information will be saved or returned. Failure to return items on time may result in suspension of checkout privileges temporarily or permanently as well as an academic hold in the amount of the late equipment.
Once students identify an official faculty advisor, the advisor is responsible for the student's funding plan. As soon as an official faculty advisor is secured, the Computing PhD-owned laptop must be returned to the program. Official advisors are expected to provide students with the equipment they need for their research.
