Is it possible for students who defend and submit their thesis or dissertation after the spring semester Thesis and Dissertation Deadline Dates to walk in May commencement?
Yes. If students don’t meet the spring deadlines but still successfully complete their defense and submit their advisor-approved thesis or dissertation before the end of the semester, they can appeal to walk early by following these steps:
Proceed with application for Spring graduation
Complete and submit the "Boise State Commencement Appeal to Participate Early" form for the desired term
Find additional answers to your questions on the Commencement FAQs page
Will students who miss the Spring Semester Thesis and Dissertation Deadline Dates but still defend and submit their advisor-approved thesis or dissertation have to register for thesis or dissertation credits in Summer?
No. While there is a policy that students must be registered for at least one credit of thesis/dissertation in the semester in which they graduate, students who successfully complete their defense and submit their advisor-approved thesis or dissertation before the end of the semester, can qualify for a credit enrollment waiver that will allow them to graduate at the end of summer without requiring them to register for any credits in the summer term.
Students in this situation should pay attention to the current Summer Thesis and Dissertation Deadline Dates, specifically the deadlines listed for a dissertation credit enrollment waiver.
Note: The Graduate College will place theses and dissertations received after the established deadline for each semester in a queue and will review them in the order they are received. While we cannot make any promises regarding reviews after the posted deadline, there is a possibility that students early in the queue may have their document reviewed in time to graduate by the end of the desired semester.
