As outside temperatures fluctuate throughout the year it is important to understand the associated dangers with extreme heat or cold, and how wind or humidity can affect it.
i. ATs, AD, and coaches should monitor outdoor temperatures to determine if it is safe to participate or if modifications need to be made to ensure the safety of the athlete/s.
a. The AT will use a Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature device to accurately measure the conditions and determine if any safety measures need to be taken.
ii. The AT will use the reading from the device and the chart to determine if the conditions require any modifications.
REMINDER: These conditions can change based on the surface area being used. Grassy surfaces tend to stay cooler than turf or track surfaces.
{ The Wet Bulb Globe allows us to measure the heat stress index, ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind chill, and other weather related conditions.}
If heat illness is suspected follow the steps below to initiate emergency treatment of the athlete/s:
Immediately remove the athlete/s from participation and notify AT of suspected heat illness or call EMS
Remove all equipment and excess clothing from the athlete/s.
move to a shaded, cool area and use cold wet towels/Ice/water to cover as much of the body surface as possible (Mainly armpits, neck, groin).
Always cool before transporting!
