He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora
He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora
This is the whakataukī for our Health and Physical Education Curriculum. It is the theme in which we deliver our curriculum with the hope that each ākonga become ignited with positive feelings from the activities we explore and in turn raising their sense of self worth and ensuring they have a positive connection with movement to enable their lifelong commitment to their tinana.
Karawhiua! Give it your all!
Being able to understand what you are doing and why you are doing it, is essential learning in Health and Physical Education. This is ultimately where the growth and development occurs. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is an integral part of this process. Developing a growth mindset approach is what we foster at BOIC.
For example, believing in the power of YET:
I can't do this... YET
This doesn't work... YET
I don't know... YET
It doesn't make sense... YET
I don't get it...YET
I'm not good at this...YET
Striving to be the best version of yourself is a never ending journey.
PARTICIPATING & CONTRIBUTING
Being actively involved in every lesson is necessary. There may be activities that ākonga enjoy more than others but it is important that you give your best efforts in every lesson. Failure is not even trying, we understand that there is a vast level of skill and ability across activities but all we ask is you try your best, have a growth mindset and rise to what may be challenging for you.
USING LANGUAGE SYMBOLS & TEXTS
Within our subject there is specific words that are used and being able to understand these is important. In particular when taking on roles of officiating, umpiring and scoring in a practical context is where this can be used.
MANAGING SELF
Students are expected to manage self in relation to bringing a change of appropriate activewear for their PE sessions each day. This is important to ensure good hygiene practices and it enables them to get fully involved with the activities required. Having good habits and routine with knowing what classes they have each day and being prepared the night before are helpful skills. Also within activities in class there will be opportunities where students are to lead situations individual, or as a group to help develop their interpersonal skills.
RELATING TO OTHERS
Being able to connect with others is integral in Health and Physical Education. There are plenty of group and team work situations that rely heavily on being able to work together to achieve a goal. There is no 'i' in team so it is important that all individuals in classes show understanding, support and empathy for one another. This will ensure 'kotahitanga' amongst classes and enable them to have positive and enlightening learning experiences within their classes. Peer Coaching is a specific teaching/learning approach that is embraced within our classes at BOIC, as "When one teaches, two learn.
