Statistics with Further Maths
Entry requirement
Entry requirement
These two qualifications would be offered as an option and would result in students gaining a full GCSE in Statistics and a Level 2 qualification.
Taking this option gives you two qualifications. In year 10, students work towards GCSE Statistics which is sat at the end of Year 10 and then in Year 11, students work towards AQA Further Maths Qualification.
This qualification complements and extends the content of the GCSE Mathematics, which is taken by all students. The course emphasises the theoretical, practical and applied nature of Statistics and provides an excellent background for the study of statistics, social sciences and humanities beyond GCSE level.
The collection of data.
Processing, representing and analysing data.
Probability
All topics are assessed across both papers.
This course is assessed by two exam papers which are both taken at the end of Year 10. Each paper is worth 50% and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Calculators are used in both papers.
This course provides excellent preparation for the mathematics studied in AS and A Level Mathematics. It is suitable for students who are expected to achieve a very high grade at GCSE.
The content consists of areas of Pure Mathematics:
Algebra
Co-ordinate Geometry
Trigonometry
Calculus
Matrices
Sequences
Each of these is used to support a topic from a recognised branch of Applied Mathematics.
Two 90minute exams at the end of Year 11. 2 x Non-calculator and 1x Calculator Paper
Why study this course?
Statistics extends a student's basic maths knowledge with further ways to represent and analyse the information in the world around us. Students will look at collecting, representing and analysing data as well as probability. This is useful for students who are interested in studying statistics at a higher level or who are thinking of following courses in social sciences and humanities.
The Further Maths course is a challenging introduction into the maths studied at A- level. This is useful both as an insight and as an intermediate step to studying maths at A- level and beyond.
What are the entry requirements for the course?
The Further Maths course is very challenging and is designed for students planning to move on to the A- level. This means that students who typically have the most success with this course usually come from sets 1 or 2. If you are interested in this course, please speak to your maths teacher in the first instance or contact Miss Keet, (Head of Maths).
Can you do one of the two courses?
As Statistics is studied in Year 10 and Additional Maths is studied in Year 11, the two qualifications together form the option. Neither qualification is available on its own.
What equipment will my child need for Maths?
As with the Maths GCSE, students will need a scientific calculator. These can be bought from a variety of supermarkets and stationery suppliers, or they can be purchased from the department. The model we recommend is the CASIO FX-83GTX or the FX-85GTX.
What support and additional activities are available within the course?
Each year, some students are entered into the Nation UKMT Maths challenge where they compete against other schools from across the country. Students also regularly take part in Maths challenges where they complete against other schools from the Bohunt Educational Trust.
We run support clinics for all year groups across the Upper School. These run one night a week and students can drop in for help with classwork, homework or revision as needed.
