The sports industry is constantly evolving and offers a wide range of career paths and opportunities for further study. This GCSE course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of key aspects of sports performance, covering topics such as anatomy, physiology, sports psychology, and cultural influences.
With a strong academic focus, the curriculum integrates knowledge from multiple subjects, including Biology, Physics, Psychology, and Mathematics, all explored within a sporting context. Students will not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical tools to enhance their own performance. While primarily classroom-based, the course incorporates real-world examples from practical sports settings to support learning.
Pupils will study six topic areas over the three year course:
Health, Fitness & Wellbeing
Sport Psychology
Sociocultural Influences
Physical Training
Anatomy & Physiology
Movement Analysis
Pupils will follow a three year curriculum plan studying the AQA GCSE PE course (8582). The course is assessed via two external summative exams (60% - both 1hr 15 mins), a practical assessment (30% - 10% per activity) and one internal written analysis and evaluation of performance (10%). More information on how the NEA is assessed can be found below.
Do I need to regularly take part in physical activity and sport outside of school?
Yes. 30% of the course is based on your practical performance so being involved in regular sport and activity outside of school is a prerequisite.
Will there be a responsibility for me to collect evidence for my practical performance outside of school?
Yes. To achieve the highest grades in the practical element of the course you will want to be assessed competing in your chosen sport outside of school (i.e. playing with your club). This means that you will need to gather your own video evidence. We host a parent information evening in the Autumn term of Year 10 to support you in this and ensure you know what and how you need to be filming.
What practical activities can I be assessed in?
You will be assessed in three activities. At least one must be a team activity and at least one must be an individual activity. Click here to check the list of individual activities and here for the list of team activities.
Will there be classroom lessons and a written exam?
Yes. 60% of the course is assessed by your performance in two written examinations. This is an academic course - the lessons will take place in a classroom and will be very different to what you have experienced in Year 7 and 8 PE lessons.
Can I take Sport Science and BTEC Sport?
As the courses do cover some similar content, we would advise against this.
