Student Device use and Care guidelines

  • The laptop is for educational work use.

  • The Laptop will be configured by the Technology department and should be used to connect to verified ISP providers only. Please do not connect to unsecured WIFI using a school device. Users are expected to follow best practices for protection of the device and data on the device while it is in their possession including CyberSecurity avoidance and updating of critical software as requested.

  • Users are encouraged to be permitted to take the laptop home to use outside work hours, however, and not for use by family members or any other person. Most accidents are usually the result of someone else using the computer.

  • When transporting the laptop, please consider how you will keep it protected. Laptop cases, sleeves, or shells offer protection and come in many styles to meet nearly everyone’s personal taste and needs.

  • Always shut down or put your device in sleep before moving it. Besides allowing the hard drive to “spin down” which prevents potential data loss, shutting down and restarting periodically also helps optimize the device’s performance.

  • Keep food and drinks away from your computer at all times. Damage caused by spills are not considered normal wear and tear and therefore are not covered under the extended warranty.

  • Backup and File management: All users are encouraged to keep their school related files backed up on their Goog;e Drive. Keep in mind that Help Desk does not support the storage and transfer of music and photo files. Best practice suggests that personal files be backed up to personal cloud accounts.

Security Guidelines

  • Do not leave your device unattended. When not in your direct possession, consider how you will secure your laptop.

  • Do not leave your device in a car for extended periods of time. Beside the chance of theft, prolonged exposure to extreme heat -cold can affect performance.

Troubleshooting

  • Occasionally, school personnel may request your device for regular maintenance or re-imaging.

  • The Help Desk will handle technical issues with your computer. Work orders can be submitted online through the ticketing system. Please note that the Help Desk cannot support home connections, including printers and wireless network.

Warranty

  • The device extended warranty covers the malfunctioning of parts and problems as a result of normal/reasonable wear and tear. Drops, spills, and liquid immersion are not considered normal wear and tear and are not covered under warranty.

  • Many of the safeguards mentioned above will minimize the risk of uncovered damage or loss. Policy coverage and deductibles vary by company and many companies offer the option of additional computer endorsements that will extend coverage and may include protection against drops and spills.

  • Several companies provide special insurance for computers. If interested, please call or write the Help Desk.
