Select a college
Know the admission requirements
Do they offer the major/program you wish to study?
Know the specific admissions requirements to your intended program of study
Extracurricular activities
Size of the school
Location of school
Schedule a virtual or physical (if possible) campus visit
Apply to College (These steps can be completed in any order)
Apply through the college’s admissions website or through Common App. Always be aware of deadlines.
Take the ACT or SAT and request scores be sent to the colleges to which you wish to apply.
ACT/SAT not typically required for technical colleges, but is required for the PROMISE Scholarship
Request high school transcript be sent to the college through Parchment (see above)
If required, request a letter of recommendation from your counselor or a teacher (at least two weeks in advance of due date; complete questionnaire)
Paying for College
Complete the FAFSA (available in December) to be eligible for grants, student loans, PROMISE scholarship, and WV Invests grant, and more.
Apply for scholarships through the UHS Counseling site or CFWV.
Military
Take the ASVAB (final week of October)
Choose the right match (which military branch and job within the military)
Meet the recruiter
Complete the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station)

WV PROMISE Scholarship Application Instructions

Eligibility Requirements
Complete the FAFSA and Promise Application by March 1, 2025
Must have resided in WV for 12 consecutive months preceding the scholarship deadline
Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 core GPA
Minimum Test Scores:
ACT: 21 Composite with a minimum of 19 in English, Math, Science, and Reading
SAT: Total score of 1080 with minimum 510 in Math and 510 in Reading and Writing
Important Note
You have until graduation to meet or potentially fall below the GPA requirements and until June/July to meet testing requirements, but you still must apply by March 1, 2025.

WV Invests Grant

West Virginia Invests is a last-dollar-in financial aid program designed to cover the cost of tuition, mandatory fees and approved academic program fees for certificate or associate degree programs
Students must enroll in specific high-demand fields, as determined by the West Virginia Department of Commerce, at a participating West Virginia public two- or four-year institution.
