Course Description
Art 1 is an introductory course that explores the fundamental concepts of visual art and
design. Students will learn to apply the Elements and Principles of Art, study historical and
cultural art movements, and express themselves through a variety of media including
drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. This course emphasizes creative
thinking, problem-solving, and the development of technical skills.
Course Goals & Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Understand and apply the Elements of Art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture,
space).
Understand and apply the Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement,
pattern, rhythm, unity).
Demonstrate knowledge of art history and cultural context.
Explore a variety of artistic media and techniques.
Communicate ideas and personal meaning through visual expression.
Engage in thoughtful critique and reflection on art.
Develop a portfolio showcasing their artistic growth.
Standards Alignment
This course is aligned with the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for
Visual Arts Proficiency, specifically addressing:
- Creating: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
- Presenting: Analyze, interpret, and select artistic work for presentation.
- Responding: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
- Connecting: Relate artistic ideas and work with societal, cultural, and historical context.
Materials Needed - ( Students are responsible for getting their own 7" x 10" Sketchbook. Sketchbooks need to be mixed media weight paper. Sketchbooks are available from Amazon , Michaels, Target and similar stores. Sketchbooks are expected to be brought into class each day)
Sketchbook (8.5”x11” or larger)
Pack of #2 Pencils and eraser
Other supplies may be requested throughout the semester.
All other materials will be provided by the school.

Make-Up Work & Late Policy
Students are expected to complete assignments on time. Make-up work due to absences
must be arranged with the teacher and completed within one week. Late work may receive
partial credit unless arrangements are made in advance.
