Modern "color guard" has evolved over the years into a sport that's a form of dance theater. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movements. These methods help express a dynamic passage and visual representation of music. Color guards can be found in, high schools, middle schools, some universities, and also some independent organizations some of which are related to drum corps.

Today the guard is used for added visual appeal during a marching band show. Typically marching bands perform during football games at halftime, and parades. When football season is over most band programs look to their concert season and color guard members move into their indoor season during the winter months. This is where the name "Winter Guard" comes from.

Many color guards compete during the winter months in circuits such as Winter Guard International (WGI) and/or a local circuit. Heritage is proud to be a member of WGI and East Tennessee Performing Arts Association (ETPAA).
