Art Classes

Art Foundations (Elective)

This course offers an overview of the visual arts in order to provide a foundation for further study.  Students will become familiar with the Elements and Principles of Design as well as basic color theory.  Students will gain experience in various materials, processes, techniques and styles.  Students will learn and use methods of analysis, criticism and interpretation and will become acquainted with periods in art history.  This class does include working from an art textbook.  


Art Intermediate (Elective)

Intermediate Art is a continuation of Art Foundations.  This course builds on the knowledge base built in Art Foundations and introduces students to new ideas, materials and processes needed for artistic thinking and creating.  A refined focus on the Elements and Principles of Design, incorporating creativity and the design process will be emphasized.  Students will also explore connections between works of art and their historical contexts.  This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in the visual arts through a variety of materials and processes.


AP Art & Design (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Instructor Approval

5 Periods/week Grades 11, 12 upon approval

2 Semesters Fee: $30.00 and AP Exam Cost ($89.00-subject to change based on College Board)

The AP Art & Design Portfolio course is for students interested in a rigorous and focused study in art.  Students will develop a quality portfolio that shows mastery of concept, composition and execution of drawing, 2D design or 3D design.  This course revolves around the creation of a portfolio of work (that meet specific criteria determined by the College Board that demonstrates quality, concentration and breadth.  The completed portfolio will be submitted to the College Board for college credit.  As in any college level course, students will be expected to spend some time outside of class in order to complete assignments. The AP exam will be given in May.


Ceramics Foundations (Elective)

.50 Credit Prerequisite:  None

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

1 Semester Fee: $30.00

This is a detail-oriented introductory course that focuses on processes and techniques, as well as the history and modernization of ceramics.  The techniques that will be emphasized are coil, slab, pinching and hand building.  This course also covers decorating techniques, including glazing and carving.


Ceramics Intermediate (Elective)

.50 Credit Prerequisite:  Ceramics Foundations

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

1 Semester Fee: $30.00

This course is an extension of Ceramics Foundations.  Students will use the skills established during their previous ceramics class to create more challenging and larger projects.  This is an advanced level class; therefore, above-average work and effort from every student is required.


Advanced Ceramics (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite:  Ceramics Foundation & Ceramics Intermediate & Instructor Approval

5 Periods/week Grades  10, 11, 12  

2 Semesters Fee $60.00

This course is designed for the advanced level ceramic student who excelled in Ceramics Intermediate and would like to improve further.  Students who are approved for this course will be challenged in the areas of hand building, throwing on the pottery wheel, decoration and glazing, design and craftsmanship.  


Digital Art Foundations (Elective)

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

1 Semester Fee:  $25.00

This course uses computer technology to produce an artistic image.  Students will learn computer illustration techniques, image manipulation and graphic design techniques while using the Elements and Principles of Design to create cohesive, meaningful and aesthetically pleasing compositions.  Students will learn and use methods of analysis, criticism and interpretation. 


Digital Art Intermediate (Elective)

.50 Credit Prerequisite:  Digital Art Foundations

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

1 Semester Fee:  $25.00

This course is an extension of Digital Art Foundations.  Students will improve upon their computer art skills, as well as learn new illustration techniques, image manipulation and graphic design techniques.  The Elements and Principles of Design will continue to be an area of concentration to create cohesive, meaningful and aesthetically pleasing compositions.


Fine Art Concepts & Creations (Elective)

.50 Credit Prerequisite:  Instructor Approval

5 Periods/week Grades 10, 11, 12 upon approval

1 Semester Fee: $25.00

This is an advanced level class.  The purpose of this course is to investigate the history, aesthetics, processes, artists and influences directly dealing with the development and importance of several styles and genres.  Several mediums may be explored. This is a repeatable course.


Band Classes

The Bloom-Carroll Music Department is proud of its broad selection of course offerings for the interested music student. Participation in these ensembles provide for experiences leading toward a better balanced student. (All music courses may be repeated for additional credit).

Band (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Successful completion of 8th grade band/Director’s approval

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

2 Semesters Fee: $100.00

Band is a class that develops musical skills and knowledge through performance.  It is a yearlong course consisting of both Marching Band and Symphonic Band.  Marching Band members must commit to a schedule of after-school rehearsals and performances at all varsity football games, parades and contests.  Summer rehearsals, including band camp, are also required for participation.  The Symphonic Band begins in mid-November.  Concert Band members are encouraged to develop their own musical abilities to the fullest extent through participation in large group, small group and solo performances in local and state level adjudicated events.  Members are required to attend these performances.


Pep Band (Elective)

.25 Credit Prerequisite: Enrollment in Band

Meets after school Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Fee: None

Pep band provides music for home varsity basketball games and pep rallies throughout the winter.  Members must be committed to the schedule of all assigned home games.  Members are required to attend these performances.


Color Guard (Elective)

.25 Credit Prerequisite: Audition in the Spring of the previous school year

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

1 Quarter Fee: $100.00


The Color Guard is part of the Marching Band.  Membership is open to both Band members and those not enrolled in Band.  Members must commit to a schedule of after school rehearsals, band camp, summer rehearsals and performances at all varsity football games, parades and contests.  Non-Band members must be enrolled in Color Guard the first nine weeks.  Members are required to attend these performances.


Jazz Orchestra (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Enrollment in Band & Audition only

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

2 Semesters Fee: None

Students study the advanced styles, literature, improvisation and history of the genre.  This is a performance based course that involves weekly-after school rehearsals and performances throughout the school year.  Admission into this course is by audition only.  Students will be placed in either the Jazz Orchestra or Jazz Ensemble based on the audition results.  A prerequisite of this course is enrollment in the band program.  Exceptions include students who do not play traditional band instruments, i.e. Vocalist, guitarists, bassists and pianists.


Jazz Ensemble (Elective)

BC Jazz Band studies the beginning techniques and improvisation of jazz, giving each member an introduction to the jazz idiom.


Songwriting: Writing, Arranging & Producing Music

1 Semester Fee: $13 workbook

This Songwriting class is designed to provide the tools of theory and composition for you to begin your journey into songwriting.


Choral Classes

Mixed Ensemble (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: None

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

2 Semesters Fee: Tux/Dress Rental $25

The purpose of this group, which is composed of both young men and women, is to provide a wide variety of experience in part singing.  The mixed chorus performs at scheduled seasonal concerts.  Members are required to attend these performances.


Chamber Singers (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Audition Required

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

2 Semesters Fee: Tux/Dress Rental $25

Chamber Singers develops musical skills and knowledge through performance.  Members of this select ensemble will perform at numerous community functions throughout the year, signing a varied repertoire of music.  Students in this ensemble participate in related fine arts study through travel to major cities, in addition to local performances throughout the school year. Members are required to attend scheduled performances.

*Members of Chamber Singers are encouraged to develop their own musical abilities through participating in private study and other outside opportunities.


Theatre

In this course we will be touching base on multiple levels of the theatre.  Some of the topics we will be discussing during will be: Stage – Movement and Direction, Lights and Sound, History, Backstage and Costumes.
