Career Advising

Students in Career Advising will be provided access to a comprehensive menu of resources and support to prepare students for their future success. Through relevant classroom instruction, career-related learning experiences and consistent counseling and advising, students can learn about themselves-their interests, skills, preferences and aspirations-so they can explore appropriate career possibilities and educational pathways. Career Advising provides direct instruction in self-exploration to aid in planning for future life goals and informs students of the vastness of occupations and training opportunities available to them beyond high school so that they can begin to make decisions and set goals early in their high school career.

The Career Exploration course aids students in outlining their interests, aspirations, strengths and abilities as they explore their various collegiate and career paths. Students will learn how their talents and interests fit into the world of work as they prepare for their future. On-line activities will include researching various colleges and careers, completing surveys and building a current resume. This course is extremely rich with technology, combining online and classroom-based learning that may include various opportunities for students to interact with their peers, teachers and professionals in the work community.
Career Work (Elective)

Career Work is a course designed to provide students with individual study in skilled or semi-skilled trade and health occupations. Students will explore occupational areas and create a career plan. Students will learn about employment service agencies, complete job application forms, prepare resumes, obtain letters of references and complete simulated interviews. Students will learn about personal traits that employers expect of employees. Training will assist the student in attaining his or her stated career goal. Career Work will also provide students with on-the-job training in skilled or semi-skilled trade and health occupations. Students will be employed or will complete community service for an average of 15 hours/week under the supervision of the CEW coordinator.
Freshmen Development

This course is required for all ninth grade students to provide a smooth transition into the high school setting. An emphasis will be placed on developing effective behavioral, decision-making and communication skills that students will use to successfully navigate their school and life experiences. This class will meet every other day.
Leadership Development (Elective)

Through reading, researching, and school-related projects, students will develop the necessary knowledge, attitudes, and skills to fulfill leadership opportunities in the school setting. Students will study leadership, effectiveness; assess their individual leadership styles and skills; and establish personal goals and understanding of leadership effectiveness. An emphasis will be placed on developing effective communication skills, habits characteristic of effective teens, and group skills including team building, conflict resolution, and stress management. Students will be asked to participate in group projects that benefit others in order to apply effective decision-making, communication, and critical thinking. The focus of this class will be to give you the tools you need to become great leaders.
Peer Tutoring (Elective)

Peer Mentors will learn communication skills, positive self-concept, leadership, study skills, and conflict resolution skills. This course allows juniors and seniors who are enrolled to earn credit by helping middle or high school students think, problem solve and learn to study efficiently. Students must be able to provide their own transportation to the elementary campus. This class may be repeated, but no additional credit will be received. Students will learn how to help their peers in accordance with the Code of Ethics from the National Association of Tutorial Services and Bloom-Carroll High School Code of Conduct.
Pre-Apprenticeship (Elective)

This course is designed for seniors who are looking to gain experience and certification in a skilled trades career, or for seniors who are looking for alternative methods to meeting graduation requirements. This is a full year course. The first semester is devoted to exploring skilled trades such as HVAC, Electrical, etc. The second semester, students choose one of the skilled trades to focus on while earning a certification and pre-apprenticeship credit. Pre Apprenticeship credit can be utilized to jumpstart your career and/or applied as an alternative component to graduation. This course is located off-campus at the Fairfield County Workforce Center.

The Study Skills curriculum is designed to help develop the skills necessary for improved success in the classroom, particularly the core content areas. Self-advocacy and frequent communication with teachers will be encouraged and reinforced, along with basic daily and weekly organizational routines. This course is designed to help students to sharpen their study habits in a variety of areas, including: listening, speaking, reading, writing, notetaking, studying for tests, critical thinking, time management, memorization techniques and goalsetting.
