English 9

English 9 is the required English class for ninth grade students not in Honors English 9.  Students should expect stricter, more advanced academic requirements than he/she found in previous English classes.  Literature study will include understanding, enjoying and analyzing the short story, non-fiction, the novel, poetry and drama.  The students will also work on vocabulary, communication and writing development.  The students will develop their research skills and study skills, test-taking skills and listening and speaking skills.  Each student is required to complete a research paper.


English 9 Honors

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Enrichment English 8 OR Selection based on Grades / Standardized Test Scores / Administrative Approval

The purpose of Honors English 9 is to provide high-ability students with high-level tasks appropriate for their learning capabilities.  The course introduces students to the formal study and analysis of literature and stresses writing skills, grammar, vocabulary and communication and writing development.  The students will develop their research skills, test-taking and speaking skills.  Each student is required to complete a research paper.


English 10

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: One Core English Credit

2 Semesters Fee: None

English 10 includes studies in grammar, writing, vocabulary and literature with emphasis on formal writing in preparation for English 11 and 12, as well as for college or for the Career Center.  Each student is required to write several papers in preparation for the state ELA II exam.


English 10 Honors

Honors English 10 provides high-ability students with language arts studies appropriate to students’ learning capabilities.  This course continues the formal study of literature, stresses writing skill, especially composition, and reviews grammar through editing skills.  Each student is required to write several papers in preparation for the state ELA II exam.

English 11

English 11 is the American Literature and Composition class for the eleventh-grade student.  The course consists of reading and discussing novels, essays, short stories, plays and poetry by American authors.  Communication skills, oral and written, are reinforced and developed.  Composition skills will be stressed through numerous essays, projects and a research paper.  Grammar and vocabulary, with an emphasis on the ACT, will be taught.


AP Language and Composition

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Successful Completion of English 10 Honors or Administrative Approval

2 Semesters Fee: AP Exam Cost ($89.00 subject to change based on College Board)

The goal of this course is to engage students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of contexts and to become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes.  Students completing this course will be able to write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional lives.  We will emphasize the expository, analytical and argumentative writing and reading that forms the basis of academic and professional communication.  Students will need to plan time in their schedule for a significant amount of reading and writing.  The AP exam will be given in May. 


English 12

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Three Core English credits

This course provides the senior student with a background in British/World literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Twentieth century.  The student should have a firm foundation in composition skills to facilitate analysis of various aspects of literature and to be able to write a comprehensive research paper.  The students will also focus on vocabulary development and oral communication skills. 


English 12 CCP

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Recommended three Core English credits/Meet College / University Enrollment Criteria

1 Semester Fee: None

In this course, students have the opportunity to participate in the College Credit Plus program through Hocking College.  There is the possibility that students can receive a Freshman English Composition credit by the end of the semester.  Students will parallel the English 12 syllabus but with an intense composition focus.


Speech (Elective)

This course is designed to teach students the skills required to prepare and present a public address.  We will focus on varying methods of addressing an audience in many different situations.  Some speeches will be prepared ahead of time, requiring research and documentation, while others will be delivered impromptu. Students will present a speech in front of the class, with written, guided preparation, approximately once a week.  


Reading Laboratory (Elective)

1.00 Credit Prerequisite: Enrollment based on IEP or  Administrative Approval

5 Periods/week Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

2 Semesters Fee: None

In Reading Laboratory, each student’s reading skills are assessed and evaluated.  As a result of this testing, individualized lessons are developed to address weak or problem areas.  In this way, a student focuses on specific reading skills which he/she needs to improve.  The laboratory activities include lessons on vocabulary development, context clues, usage, inferential, literal and critical comprehension skills and study skills.  Each student is encouraged to learn self-discipline, responsibility for self, self-pacing in completing assigned work and self-direction. (This course may be repeated for additional credit.)
