The Bloom-Carroll Foreign Language Department contains elective courses designed primarily for the college prep student. These courses are needed to meet entrance requirements to some colleges and universities.

The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the patterns of foreign language. In first year French, students concentrate on speaking, reading, writing and understanding French. The people and customs of France and Francophone countries are introduced. Independent, online assignments as well as worksheets, projects, tests and quizzes are required, and students are expected to work with a partner or groups in class.

French II aims to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on better understanding of grammatical concepts. Students will learn about life and people in France as well as typical French customs, traditions and habits. Independent, online assignments as well as worksheets, projects, tests and quizzes are required, and students are expected to work with a partner or groups in class.

French III will provide the serious French student with additional listening, speaking, reading and writing practice. Higher level grammatical concepts are stressed. The appreciation of French literature is introduced with an emphasis placed on reading comprehension. A more detailed study of France, its people, customs, geography and history is included. Independent, online assignments as well as worksheets, projects, tests and quizzes are required, and students are expected to work with a partner or groups in class.

French IV will provide the serious French student with intermediate to advanced reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The appreciation of French literature is stressed with the reading and analysis of Francophone stories, poems and plays. A more detailed study of Francophone countries is included. Independent, online assignments as well as worksheets, projects, tests and quizzes are required, and students are expected to work with a partner or groups in class.

French V is the culmination of language study at the high school. Students will review verbs and tenses previously covered. Language structure and grammatical concepts will also be reviewed in preparation for a college placement test. Different types of literature will be studied, including plays and historical novels. Class discussions and conversations will be in French. Independent, online assignments as well as worksheets, projects, tests and quizzes are required, and students are expected to work with a partner or groups in class.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with the patterns of the foreign language. Students will use an online learning platform for homework activities. With this program, students will interact with peers outside of class on a semi-regular basis. The emphasis is on training the student to understand and produce Spanish. Home internet access is NOT a requirement, although it allows students more freedom to complete coursework. This course is primarily based on participation, and each student is expected to take an active role in his/her learning.

Spanish III is designed for the serious Spanish student. In Spanish III, all verb tenses will be covered. This course will involve extensive writing and oral projects. Students will perform skits in Spanish in front of the class as well as complete written assignments. Emphasis will be placed on reading comprehension and writing skills, but Spanish III will begin to incorporate speech and listening skills. Spanish and Latin American culture will also be a topic in this course.

Spanish IV is designed to further skills learned in previous years. Students will follow Ohio University language curriculum, including an online homework component to prepare students for life after high school. With this program, students will interact with peers outside of class on a regular basis. We will address all four basic language skills: reading, writing, speaking and understanding culture. Home internet access is NOT a requirement, although it allows students more freedom to complete coursework. Students may have the opportunity to receive college credit through Ohio University CCP. A placement exam will be required and students must register in advance in order to be eligible to receive college credit.

This is the capstone Spanish course, focusing on perfecting reading, listening, reading and speaking abilities. Students taking this class will be given various standardized tests, similar to college entrance exams, to prepare them for college, or even to see if they can test out of the foreign language requirement. Spanish history and culture will also be studied in-depth. This course is designed for serious students and aims at producing near-fluent abilities in Spanish.
