Trends' Impact on Education

Slime in school, is meant to relieve stress, right? Some students use it for that purpose, but others use it as a toy. In an interviewed with Ms. Kamphuis, a 7th grade teacher she said, “Last year the stress balls, slime, and fidget spinners were a big distraction to my students.” she also said that some of her students wanted to see what they could do with it. Could they pull it, or make noises with it, or even twist it to make a bubble. This just added to the chaos that kids called fun, and according to the results of a survey about which trend students wanted unband, most kids agree that slime is just fun to play with, not a distraction. On the other side teachers think they are very much a distraction. This years trend, friendship bracelets is used mostly by 8th grade girls, and some 7th and 6th grade girls. With the bad reputation other trends have set in this school, many teachers are weary of this new one, and others are already completely against it. One of these teachers is Mrs. Stordalen, her comment was, “They are a distraction to the class and interrupt our rehearsal because I have to constantly tell people to put them away!” Mrs. Emerson had a slightly different experience. She said, “ I have seen them in class but they're not a distraction…Yet.”

As the school year comes to a close, kids are becoming more fidgety and turn more and more to trends to keep them busy, this along with the excitement of summer, days away makes it most likely that those trends will become a major distraction to students, and teachers. So as you do your best to stay focused in your work. Remember that trends meant to keep your hand busy are a great outlet, but if they become a distraction it can lead to late school work, angry teachers, and bad grades that no one wants right as we’re ending this year. So stay focused, do your best, and hold on to the hope of warm summer days coming. By:Kinley Backsen and Rylie Harris
