Student of the Quarter

What happened?

By: Kira Sharp

Imagine this, you are sitting at another boring team meeting at the end of the quarter, barely paying attention. There are many whispers from those around you who don't think they are heard and every once in a while someone gets up and moves to the front of the room to collect a piece of paper. They then just stand there and grin at their friends while they themselves are wearing a look of disbelief. A wave of tiredness washes over you from your lost hours of sleep the night before but it all disappears within an instant, it all disappears when you hear your name uttered by the teacher with the seemingly pointless papers. You look up sharply and everyone is clapping for you. What happened?

You just won Student of the Quarter!

"Why did I receive this title? What does it mean? How in the world...?" You may find yourself asking one or more of these questions. Well, fret no more because here are the answers.

What does it mean?

A Student of the Quarter is a leader, they can take the reigns in any situation and still be empathetic to others. Students of the Quarter always do their best and they know how to behave properly in their environments. They are model students that you could go to for help. If you are chosen to be a Student of the Quarter, it means that you stand apart from the crowd with your leadership and your hard work! You should be proud and enjoy your moment of recognition.

Even with this knowledge, you should always remember, there are so many students on each team and only four quarters to acknowledge them. It will always feel amazing to receive credit but as long as you know that you are doing good, then you shouldn't feel ashamed of not being named Student of the Quarter.

Dream Team's Selection Process

By: Kira Sharp

You may know that the Students of the Quarter are chosen by teachers but do you know how they are selected by your teachers? Well the answer is within our grasps thanks to an interview with Mr. Neset, the eighth grade math teacher on Dream Team.

The process begins with a list. A list of all the students on the team, more specifically Dream Team. The teachers on said team go through the list and each of them vote on which students they would like to see receive Student of the Quarter. Every teacher has unlimited votes. Finally, they see which five to ten students got the most votes and those are the ones named Student of the Quarter. It is a very simple process that can take quite a while.

What does it mean to be student of the quarter? I asked that question to Logan Nissley a dream team student that was rewarded with one of the certificates. Logan stated that being recognized by the teachers made her very proud, and that the best part was getting tell her parents that she won it two years in a row. She also mentioned how it sets a good example for her brother because it sets a goal for him and other students who want to achieve this award. Logan also pointed out some good ways to become student of the quarter. For starters, she said making sure she gets her homework done on time, and it helps to do it the night you get it so you won't be stressed the next day. Another thing is to make sure you are organized with homework and extracurricular activities like sports, church, and spending time with family. Lastly she said it really helps not to procrastinate, but to ask question to clarify anything with her teachers so she can fully understand what needs to be accomplished.

Connor Evanson and I interviewed Michael Twardoski about why he believes he was picked for Student of the Quarter. He thought he was picked because he got all of his work done for every class. Including getting good grades for the 2 R's, Respect and Responsibility, which he mentioned was something he was good at and made sure he was respectful to everyone. Along with that, he thought it was was important to keep up his grades so the teachers would notice his hard work.
