Reading at home
Students grow enormously during their second-grade year! One of the best things you can do at home is have your child read to you. It is recommended to have your child read nightly for at least 15-20 minutes. This will help tremendously with their progress in reading as well as strengthen their skills of comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. Asking your child meaningful questions during and after their reading will help build these skills too. Remember that we want to create a "love for reading." Students will have the opportunity to bring home books from school that will strengthen and encourage their love for reading. We encourage you to read any books your family has at home, in addition to those brought home from school. Below are a few examples to help support you as you support your child at home with their reading.
This year, we are sending home a nightly reading log to be completed as homework. This can be found in your child’s take-home folder. 2nd grade is asking each child to read for 15-20 minutes nightly with someone. This can be mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, etc. (If you are in need of reading materials or books, please reach out to your child’s teacher.) Then, your child will answer 2-3 of the listed discussion questions verbally. Please initial next to the discussion questions for each day’s reading log (where it says “parent signature”). Your child’s reading log will be checked daily by their teacher.
