120th Day Student Project

For Open House this year we will displaying a "Place Value Gallery" and are incorporating the number 120.

Why you may ask?!

One of the most important First Grade math TEK standards is that students "use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 120 in more than one way as so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones." We use a 120 chart in class to help us practice skip counting, one more, one less, ten more, ten less, addition, subtraction, counting by decades from any number, and MANY other numeracy skills.

We are asking that each student collect 120 items and bring to school by March 4th so that we have time to build our hallway gallery. The 120 items do not need to be anything big or complex. Suggestions, but not limited to - buttons, pennies, stickers, twigs, stamps, pieces of string, pompoms, pasta, etc; they can even illustrate 120 of something.

They can display on paper, poster board, in a ziplock baggie, or on a shirt.

We appreciate your continued support by spending 10–15 minutes several days a week reading with your child. R.E.D. folder books should be read consistently and returned weekly (or more often) so students can continue to grow and move forward. Practicing numeracy skills such as addition and subtraction at home is also greatly beneficial. These small, consistent practices add up in powerful ways.

Together, we can help students grow in confidence, skills, and a love of learning. Thank you for being such an important part of your child’s education.

Folders - please, please check your child's folder DAILY. Important information, forms, notes, graded work, and their decodable book to practice are communicated through their daily folder.
R.E.D. Folders - please take the time to read with your child each week. The decodable book in your child's R.E.D. folder is specifically chosen for them based on their current skills level. The decodable book helps strengthen their decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. Books should be coming back at least once a week.

Dismissal:Dismissal Bell is at 3:10If your child is a car rider or parent walk-up, their YELLOW dismissal card is REQUIRED. For safety reasons, we will not release your child to anyone without the YELLOW pick-up card. If you misplace yours or if someone else will be picking up your child at any time, you must contact the front office. If transportation arrangements change at any time, you must contact the front office, and they will let the classroom teacher know.
Helpful info:Students must wear (or bring) closed-toe shoes for PE. A water bottle is encouraged (water ONLY)We will have a "working SNACK time" in the afternoon. Please send a healthy (no sugary sweets) for your child if able. *If you are able to donate snacks for our class, it is greatly appreciated!!

Daily Take-Home Folder

Your child will bring home their take-home folder daily. It will contain your child's completed work, important informational papers, as well as critical papers that will need to be signed and returned back to school.

Please review your child's folder every day and sign it.

How Can You Support Your Child At Home

Please set aside 10-15 minutes in the evenings during the week to practice these decodable skills with your child. Partnering together to reinforce reading skills at home will help your child be as successful as possible. More information was sent home in your child's folder and is also posted below.
