Practicum Experience

Practicum of Law, Public Safety, Security, and Corrections (12th grade)

Prerequisite: Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, & Security, Law Enforcement 1, and Law Enforcement 2.

This Advanced laboratory-based practicum experience is a yearlong program that will enable participants to earn a total of two elective high school credits and provides a hands-on internship learning experience for those wanting to pursue a career in law, public safety, corrections, or security. Students in this course will learn about leadership in law enforcement by serving as the student leaders who supervise the daily operations of the Criminal Justice Student Service Center under the guidance of the instructor. In addition, students may choose to participate in an off-site internship experience (***specific restrictions apply).

Daily student activities may include but are not limited to physical training, team and leadership building, policing instruction from instructor, obstacle course activities, defensive tactics instruction, SWAT training, off-site field trips, and more.

Students in this course are REQUIRED to complete as part of the the total internship experience:

  • Internship A (13 Weeks) (TBD)

  • Internship B (10 Weeks) (TBD)

  • Burleson Police Department CExplorer Program (4 hrs every other week)

  • Ride Along/Career Observation A (TBD)

  • Ride Along/Career Observation B (TBD)

  • 10 Hours of Community Service A, (Year)

  • 10 Hours of Community Service B, (Year)

  • Introduction to ICS FEMA Certification

  • Disaster Response & Management FEMA Certification

  • Decision Making & Problem Solving FEMA Certification

  • Security II Certification (Cost and prerequisites)

  • International Academies of Emergency Dispatch ($$)

  • Stop The Bleed

  • State of Texas Security Level II


Students in this course will need a 1.5inch 3 ring binder and 10 dividers and Black pen. This will be used for the students practicum experience portfolio.

Students enrolled in this course are eligible to participate in SkillsUSA. They must pay the required SkillsUSA Registration Dues if they choose to participate.
