Math, reading, writing, and science are important subjects, but so is social-emotional Learning (SEL). It is an integral part of what we do every day. It improves relationships and student attitudes toward school. It boosts behaviors like sharing, empathy, and kindness. This creates a more positive school climate for students and teachers alike.
Students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Some have a history of trauma or are homeless, hungry, or struggling with other issues that make learning difficult. SEL equips all with resilience and healthy coping skills. It also creates an environment of safety and connection that fosters optimal learning. When students feel safe and cared for at school, they are more willing to learn and to build positive relationships.
Below are the SEL standards that we will focus on this year through our new program title Purposefull People (Character Strong).
