I begin our time in language arts as a whole group. I will read a book to the class and take time to discuss and analyze the text. Often times, there will be a meaningful opportunity for students to show what they know in connection to a book that we have just read. Partner discussions are an important part of our learning during reading time. During whole group reading time, we read a variety of texts and focus on a particular reading skill, such as making connections, visualizing the story, retelling the story, discussing the main idea, etc. During modeled reading, we will read a variety of texts focusing on fluency and expression.
After whole group reading, we transition from whole group time to small group and independent work time. The students are formally assessed to determine their reading level and progress. The lessons and corresponding activities are leveled according to the child's reading level. Once complete, students will rotate through a variety of tasks related to our whole group reading and spelling skills.
