Digital Media 1 Syllabus and Contract

Fall 2017
Class Objective:
To provide an introduction to various forms of digital media, and to prepare for the Digital Media career pathway. The course counts for Tech or Art credit. The course will provide the opportunity to develop skills in digital photography, art and video in technical, business, creative, critical thinking, writing and aesthetic judgment areas. The impact and integration of media in society and current events will be explored and developed. Photo imaging techniques will be emphasized and artistic experimentation is encouraged. Additionally, through integrated historical and academic perspectives, students will understand the elements of art and principles of design and apply them to their artwork and projects. Students will develop knowledge and skills to use computers effectively, design documents, presentations, images, games and films that will enhance their work at school and future careers. Students will design resumes, posters, advertising, artwork, interactive animation, video games, videos, and images. Students will learn to be educated content creators as well as digital citizens.
Student responsibilities:
· Always sit at your assigned seat/workstation. Never horseplay inside of the classroom and lab. Only leave seat with permission.
· Participate in all class set up, discussions, projects, critiques and clean up. Attendance is part of your OVERALL grade and excessive absences will cause it to be lowered. Excessive absences will result in a FAIL.
· Complete each assignment and meet all assignment deadlines. Late work will be lowered one letter grade (A work will be given a B). No work will be accepted later than one week after the due date, unless turned in with a legitimate medical excuse. Grades will be determined based on the following criteria: craft/technical skill, creativity, content and participation. Some projects may use all criteria, some may use 2 or 3 depending on the assignment. The measure of success will be the production of quality work: digital work files, prints and projects.
· Come to class prepared and ready to begin, continue or finish work.
· Help to maintain the classroom and lab clean and neat. No food or drink (except water)
· KEEP BACKPACKS OFF YOUR BACKS AND WORK TABLES
· Respect those around you, your classroom, work areas materials and equipment. All areas will be cleaned up by everyone. Follow All Safety Rules. Abuse or unsafe use of equipment or theft will result in removal from class and a FAIL on your report card.
· Treat every member of class and school community with the utmost respect and politeness. No yelling, or profanity will be tolerated.
Class Materials:
· Headphones: any kind will do, you can purchase a set at the 99 cent store if needed.
· Paper and pen/pencil for note-taking and designing
· Optional: 2 gigabyte or higher flash drive CLEARLY LABELED with students name –you can buy these at Staples and Office Depot for about $8
COMPUTER LAB RULES AGREEMENT
Student will adhere to all BCCHS network, computer use & school handbook rules at all times.
Class Accounts:
Student will be creating and using email and other online accounts for school and educational
use only. These accounts may or may not include: BCCHS email, gmail, Google Drive, Edmodo,
dropbox.com, quizlet, and other education related sites. Student will not use class time for
non-educational games, chat, instant messaging, or personal email. Students may not take photos
without asking permission first in any class.
Student agrees to not post compromising personal information or images of self or others on
any digital device online or through Snapchat, text, or email. Student agrees not to use account of
any other student, hack in to other student’s work/school network, or place own name on
work of another student. Student will not download any materials without permission first.
Student agrees to only use their own name and school appropriate words for passwords and
user names for educational work. Student understands that nothing in the computer room or online
is private, and should understand that ALL work is subject to search at any time.
Computers and multimedia equipment are for schoolwork only.
Class Equipment:
Position keyboards to prevent bumping, or dropping off the work surface.
Handle equipment carefully and respectfully. Do not over tap or bang on keys.
Never tamper with or attempt to disrupt a computer’s operating system. Ask for help if computer is not working.
Never attempt to restart or reset equipment without permission.
Never insert a foreign object into the keyboard or any other part of the computer.
Print documents only when given permission to do so.
Make sure all keys are clean when leaving classroom.
NOTE: camera equipment use and check out is at the discretion of instructor and requires specialized instruction and demonstrated responsibility. Use is subject to additional requirements at the discretion of the instructor.
Understand that computer and camera use is a privilege. Not a right!
If Rules are not followed:
Student may be banned from using the school’s equipment, software and/or Internet for a period of time.
Student may be required to make full financial restitution for any damaged equipment or software, which may include repair service fees.
Student may face penalty of detention or class consequence as a result of breaking rules.
Student may face suspension from school if caught performing illegal acts with the equipment, software and/or internet.
