Binghamton by the Numbers

The Department of Psychology offers 3 doctoral programs:  Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive and Brain Sciences, and Clinical Psychology.  These programs have 29, 16, and 36 current graduate students, respectively, for a total of 81 doctoral students.  In Behavioral Neuroscience (BNS), greater than 95% of students obtain employment in their field within 6 months of graduation.  The average GPA for incoming students is 3.7.  BNS students publish on average 5 peer-reviewed articles while in the program.  The BNS program has 9 active research labs and has graduated 19 PhD students in the last 5 years, supported by 6 distinct Research Cores and Centers.  The average time-to-PhD last year was 5.8 years (a bit higher than usual).  

The academic year stipend for BNS students is $24,000.  When combined with summer salary of ~$7000, the average annual salary is ~$30,000.  All stipends come with full tuition scholarships and all graduate students receive travel support through a variety of mechanisms.  With the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment at ~$809/month, the cost of living in the Greater Binghamton Area is quite affordable.  Embedded within a community of about 238,700 people, Binghamton is within a 3-4 hr drive to two major metro areas, New York City and Philadelphia.  The Finger Lakes region is less than 50 miles away, with ample access to hiking, biking, fishing, boating and skiing in the local community.  Binghamton University has upwards of 14,300 undergraduates and 3,800 graduate students, supported by 768 full time faculty distributed across 7 Colleges/Schools.  Overall, Binghamton is just a great place to live and work!
