Describe your instructional challenge and how you identified it.
To begin with I started diving into - How do I/can I provide Professional Development for our Health Enhancement teachers. We are always struggling to find PD that complies with our districts needs for Step up or Trade days to apply towards our current position within the district. As I continued working with other teachers and looking into game sharing I realized we don't have a go to place for our 20 Elementary PE teachers. This go to place needed to have a place where we can find games that we all commonly use along with health activities that we can share from one teacher to another.
Describe your learners (students and diverse stakeholders) for this project and how you selected them.
After I decided that a one in all hub was needed for our team, I reached out to our PE Liaison and asked if I could join our Curriculum Team (Evidence #1). I needed to be on this team so I can work within a small group to design our YAG's, a task given to us by the Superintendent. I also needed approval by our Curriculum Director. After the brunt of the work was done I knew I needed to reach out to some other PE teachers to help with the game designs.
Why is it important for your learners (students and diverse stakeholders) that this challenge be addressed?
This is a challenge for our new PE teachers coming in to he district. When I first started 6 years ago a friend of mine gave me a 2 page pacing guide (Evidence #2) for all 6 grades including Health and PE. This was it! There was nothing that gave me game and health ideas that would pertain to our standards or grading scale. We need a place where anyone can go (PE teachers with A LOT of of experience and the newbies straight out of college) to find resources that are linked to certain proficiency scales and be equal from one school to another.
In what ways will your addressing the challenge promote or support diversity, equity, cultural competence?
By addressing this challenge it will allow all students in SD2 equity. We unfortunately have multiple students who transfer from one school to another. If us specialists are not on the same page or close to it, certain content is missed for our transferring students. By putting together this platform and attaching an updated Year at a Glance we can all follow along with each other and provide the same education to all students. My chosen competency that will help me support DEC is Collaborate Purposefully. I will show growth by collaborating with current PE teachers in our district and work with our Curriculum Director.
Is it your intention to change an existing practice/program or implement a new practice/program? Explain. Why might this practice/program be a viable solution for your challenge?
This is not my plan. My plan is to provide PE teachers with a place where everything can be found. We currently have a shared google folder where things are ALWAYS being lost. We needed a place where we have access to worksheets, games, and our proficiency scales. If we have a platform where everyone has access to we can have successful future PLC meetings where we can add to this.
On which two Overarching Competencies will you focus in addressing the identified challenge? Why are they relevant to this particular challenge?
Communication and Group Process
When unpacking the Communication competency I noticed words/sentences like... serve on a discussion panel, navigate the system for effective change, enable others to advocate for the shared vision. I know these are three areas where I can succeed in this competency. I will become a member of the right teams, I will create an effective change on how we can find our resources and I will allow for all teachers to provide content for this project.
When unpacking the Group Process competency I was drawn to the bullet point that says - Creates new groups or use existing groups and facilitate those groups to overcome challenges and to engage diverse opinions and experiences in order to meet objectives, solve problems, and achieve desired outcomes. I love this. This is my goal! I want to be able to have my PLC group continue to work together to enhance this platform. We will continue to create documents that align with our proficiency scales. In finalizing this project I would also like to be a Mentor for new PE teachers coming into our team.

Collaborate Purposefully
While I was unpacking the DEC competencies in the emerging category I came across a bullet point that says Determine and implement a plan to overcome obstacles and/or resistance. When reading this I thought about how previous PLC meetings have gone. Resistance can come from those who don't like change. I am or I should say was a person who had resistance when being asked to change the way I had been doing something. This year we as a team have been asked to create and follow new proficiency scales (Evidence #3) - which provide a lot of resistance from our 20 Health Enhancement teachers. This capstone project will create an ease for all.
Which competency in the Instructional pathway will you focus on in addressing this challenge? Why is it relevant for this particular challenge?
Facilitating Collaborative Relationships
I decided that this competency would dovetail my capstone nicely. My goal in the end of this is to bring together diverse perspectives and context to create a unified place for our Health and PE curriculum.
With whom will you work in addressing your identified challenge? Who else might you recruit beyond your own cultural and/or professional identity group? Which resources (people, money, programs, time and space, etc.) do you have to address the challenge? What resources will you need? How will you obtain them?
I plan on woking within our PLC groups to complete our YAG's and then I plan to recruit a few other PE teachers who aren't afraid of a little bit of work to create the rules of games. I will then create a Google site to host all of this content. I am lucky enough to be able to use our group time to work collaboratively with other colleagues to complete the YAG's. That is one of the most time consuming portion of this capstone.
