Q. What’s the difference between Chromebooks and other computers, like Windows Laptops or Macbooks?

A. Chromebooks are a new type of computer made to help you get things done faster and easier. Chromebooks tend to be small and portable. They run Chrome OS, an operating system that has the best of Google built-in.

Q. Where do I save my files using a Chromebook?

A. Generally, you will be working on Google Drive, but it is still possible to download files. Downloaded files save to the download folder. We recommend moving it into your Google Drive so that they can be edited live with Google’s applications (See question below).

Q. Do I have Microsoft Office on my Chromebook?

A. Instead of Office, Google Drive has access to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and other applications. These can be used instead of office and integrates well with Google Classroom.

Q. Is there a quick way I can access the websites we use?

A. Upon opening Chrome, you will see a bookmarks bar - There are folders located here with the relevant bookmarks pre-loaded inside them.

Q. Can I install software onto my Chromebook

A. In the Chrome web store, you will see addons that have been made available by Bideford College. If you feel that you need any other programs, please let your teacher know and they will speak to IT.

Q. I've logged in, what's next?

The image below shows the Google Chromebook taskbar, where you will be able to find your applications and settings.

  • The Launcher will allow you to view all installed apps on the Chromebook.

  • The Pinned Apps section in the centre of the taskbar shows open apps, and also any pinned apps. We have pinned ‘Files’ and Google Classroom.

  • The Settings section is where you can see the time, battery life and WiFi networks.
