Standard(s): S7L3.c Ask questions to gather and synthesize information about the ways humans influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms through selective breeding. (Clarification statement: The element specifically addresses artificial selection and the ways in which it is fundamentally different from natural selection.)
Objective of the Project: How funding for genetics research should be distributed? The students will choose between 3 topics (Cloning, Genetically engineered food, & Designer Babies), and create a persuasive presentation (Powerpoint, poster, speech), arguing their agreed upon position on how they think the funding should be distributed.

Entry Event: Readers Theater: How the Elephant got its Trunk
1). Students need to know that genetic information is stored in genes that are located on chromosomes inside the cell nucleus.
2). Students need to know that difficult ethical issues can occur in regards to genetic testing and alterations.
3). Know what a persuasive argument is.
