Standard(s): ELAGSE5W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. ELAGSE5RI10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
Objective: In response to Project #1 (How did people and progress shape our country?) students were asked to focus on the character traits that changemakers possess. Our Goal is to learn from individuals that made changes in their school, community, and/or world. Students were then asked to form their own opinion of the top character traits one needs to effect change.
Project Product: Opinion Essay with research and evidence, Response to The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind activities in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Entry Event: Students learned about the continent of Africa through a series of lessons on the continent's major geographical regions and its people.
Project Milestones: Entry Event> Need to Knows & What We Already Know> Novel Study, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind> Opinion Essay (writing process)> Novel Study Choice Board> Math Character Trait Art Activity> Project Reflection.

There was a large number of people, from all over the world, that immigrated to the U.S. in the 1900's bringing new traditions and culture.

Who are some changemakers currently making a difference in our world?
What character traits help people make changes in their schools, communities and world?
How can we write an opinion essay that includes facts and evidence?
What is life like in Africa, where our changemaker grew up?
Mathematics Connection:
Students related the process of analyzing the differences and similarities of character traits to the mathematics skill of comparing decimals. After discussion of this connection, students displayed both concepts in an original artistic puzzle.

5th Grade will complete the "Students Rebuild Changemaker Challenge" by nominating our Changemakers of 2020.
Students will help plan our 3rd project by answering the question, What do we want to learn next?
