Google Sites = great for building a simple site that you can share with other staff to collaborate on!
Does most of the formatting for you!
Drag and drop tools
Easily allows you to link to ANY content within your Google Drive!
Note: Any sites you build using your school issued email account will remain with our school/domain and CANNOT be transferred elesewhere
If you want a site to use elsewhere, consider Weebly, Wix, or Wordpress
Social media platforms and the benefits of each
How and WHY to use various social media platforms
Picking the platform that works for YOU
Protecting yourself and your students
Using hashtags to find and follow content
Creating a clear brand for yourself
The benefits of FlipGrid!
Inclusive
Engaging (kinda like Snapchat for kids)
FUN - stickers, emojis, filters, and more!
Encourages ALL students to participate and make their voices heard!
Allows you to provide feedback more easily and quickly
Allows students to share their thinking and learning more easily
The "grid" = a classroom where you can create tasks/topics for students to respond to
"Topics" = a task you give students to respond to through video
You can "moderate" videos so students don't see other student videos until YOU approve them
You decide if students can respond to each others videos, like each others content, or can see the total "views"
"Disco Library" = discussion library, use pre-created topics and discussions with content already created!
Flocabulary
Wonderopolis
Code
BreakoutEDU
EPIC
"Mix Tapes" - gather together exemplarily student responses to share with students to view!
Student Logins
Decide if students need a @bgcsedu.org/@uccacostams.org, if YOU create their logins, or if they can just get in with a link and password!
Flip Code: your unique URL for ALL your FlipGrids! - share this with students so they can see ALL your topics
Integrates with Google Classroom!
Add a "co-pilot" - a co-teacher to also view all your topics and student videos! (there is NO LIMIT to co-pilots on a Grid!)
Students can submit videos and then add filters, emojis, stickers, notes, etc!
Students can also film a screencast of THEIR screen! (They could present Google Slides and speak over it!)
When student work is submitted, you can view all videos, and provide feedback, scores, and even use a rubric to score student responses!
Keep in mind, you can limit student responses to between 15 seconds and 10 minutes!
Remember to outline some GROUND RULES for students using FlipGrid such as always be KIND, be respectful, only provide positive and constructive feedback. I always explain to students to provide "feed forward" instead of "feed back" --> think about providing comments that help students move FORWARD and not "back"
General reminders for creating instructional videos:
Know your audience and choose the tool/platform/format that works best for THEM!
Keep in mind you purpose/objective, clearly state it at the beginning of your video, and end your video with that same statement
Length: Most students (and adults) can't tolerate more than a 2-3 minute video. Consider "chunking" your instruction into smaller videos, and providing formative tasks or assessments after watching each video (think EdPuzzle!)
Try to never have your overall video exceed 10 minutes, since more than that is a LOT to ask a child to sit still for
Make a script in advance and story board out what you'll say and do within your video - helps ensure a clear and concise message
Be yourself! Try to be natural, use your sense of humor, pretend your students or family are right in front of you and ignore the camera.
Use titles or captions to help draw focus to your main points
Use screen annotation tools (see below) to be able to draw on your screen, highlight, circle, arrows, etc
Most likely, your video will take a couple takes, so be flexible and it's ok if you make mistakes!
Tools to consider purchasing (or just finding DIY alternatives to)
Lighting - consider a lighted selfie stand like this, or just use a makeup mirror, flashlight, or lamp!
Headphones - improve your audio quality and drown out background noise by using headphones with a built in mic
Lapel Mic - a cheap way to improve audio quality
External camera and mic (webcam) - nice, but not necessary (good if you don't have an extra device to use as a document camera)
Screencastify - overview of how to use the program and editor
WeVideo - overview of how to us the program
Animoto - quick overview
YouTube and Vimeo - possible locations to upload to (keep in mind the various ways videos can be posted public/unlisted/private and what this means)
Quick and dirty graphic design - use a Google Doc drawing box! Take a screenshot, save as a JPEG or PNG, and upload to any platform that you need
Screenshot keyboard commands:
Mac Users: command + shift + 4 (select area, then it saves the image to the desktop)
PC Users: open the snipping tool and select "New" to take a new snip!
Chromebook Users: Ctrl + Shift + Switch windows key (looks like a rectangle with 2 lines on the right). Save the image to your clipboard.
General reminders for good graphic design:
line things up properly using the horizontal and vertical guides
use no more than TWO fonts, and make sure they are balanced (serif/sans serif - don't mix em') - if needed, just use different weights on the same font
limit the palette of colors and typefaces you use
DON'T use too much text! Keep your image clean with just the most important point, add additional info in the comments
Don't clutter up your designs with too much. White space is powerful.
Canva - great simple graphic design program that makes a beautiful and professional final product. Great for ClassDojo or Social Media!
Works wonderfully through the smart phone app, and allows you to easily upload a gallery of up to 10 images on ClassDojo
Watch out for sneaky charges! Just switch your images and backgrounds as needed to avoid spending anything.
Luicid Press - great in depth graphic design tool that allow for more functionality and control over your final product
Use this if you have more time on your hands and are planning on printing your final product

How to get your FREE accounts for Peardeck and Nearpod
Both tools allow you to take over your students' screen and lead them through a slides presentation with additional engagement and assessment tools
You can ask poll questions, ask multiple choice questions, open ended questions, create a drawing, and so much more!
Students can work through these LIVE with you controlling the pace of the slide OR in "student-paced mode" where they work through the content when they want, and at their own pace (great for synchronous or asynchronous learning!)
Nearpod Benefits: HUGE bank of pre-made presentations, some you must pay for, but the pre-made content is beautiful! You can create your presentation IN Nearpod, or use the Google Slides Add-On.
Peardeck Benefits: Take a Google slides presentation you already have put together, and ADD functionality! Really cute and fun pre-made engagement slides to add to your slide deck!
Both platforms allow you to look at the data and "reports" after the presentation to see engagement levels, wrong/right questions, and so much more! This could be used as formative assessments!

How to make your posts and content look beautiful (use Canva or Lucid Press!)
Students CAN be in MULTIPLE session and chatting with many teachers simultaneously!
Do NOT activate SCENES during our closure! Leave the default scene as NONE.
Remember to "add teachers" to your classroom who also work with your students
Use the "OPEN TAB" feature to directly open Google Meet sessions on student Chromebooks (this way they don't even need the link!)
You could also use the OPEN TAB feature to directly open a Google Meet session for small groups of students that you want to have a discussion with
When multiple teachers are attached to ONE classroom, all the chats for a single student are grouped together, and students often can't tell who they are speaking with.
Feel free to create a separate GG classroom, and you can add and remove specific students from that classroom when you are working with different student groups (use their emails)
Use the "Sessions" area to see past sessions, past chat history, and other information from past sessions
Remember, only ONE person can import a classroom from Google Classroom. Whomever does this, then needs to add additional teachers to this classroom who needs access to the class.
Alternative ways to participate in discussions with kids: Padlet, using a shared Whiteboard, use shared Google docs with individual students as a journal between a teacher and student
