Daily Homework
You will see homework Mon. - Thurs. There will be at least one page of math to complete each day, as well as writing their spelling words two times each (Starting week 3).
In addition, we recommend that the students practice their math facts and write their phonograms next to the daily practice that we did, saying the sound before they write. Students should also begin the habit of reading every day. There is a reading log on the outside of their yellow folder. Start marking how many pages or chapters your child is reading a night.

Phonograms: For those who are new to our school, you may not be familiar with phonograms. If you would like some help as you assist your student with homework, below is a picture of an app that gives the student practice in a variety of ways AND provides the sounds for each phonogram (very helpful for a parent).
O,S ,N Grading-
Here in first grade, many of our grades are given as an O,S, or N grade. These letters stand for
O- Outstanding- You student has mastered this concept/idea or is performing at or above the teachers expectations. This is not an area in which your child needs improvement.
S- Satisfactory- Your student has almost mastered this concept or idea. They need a little more practice to get where they need to be. They are performing at teacher expectations but could often put in a little more effort/time to make their work exemplary.
N- Needs Improvement- Your child has not yet mastered this concept/idea. They need more practice in this area. If you see an N we ask that you focus on this area during homework and during your conversations at home.
Penmanship-
Penmanship is very important to us here at BFCS. Good handwriting is how students connect their letters to their sounds.
We grade penmanship on an O, S, N scale.
O-Outstanding, S-Satisfactory, N- Needs Improvement
In order to determine what grade your child receives we look at the Spalding outlines for good handwriting (which we call handwriting focuses). These focuses include:
-All letters sitting on the baseline
-Short letters starting at the midpoint
-Tall letters starting just below the top line
-Clock letters being round not oval
-Letter size and formation being consistent
-Down lines being straight and parallel
-Clock letters starting at 2 on the clock
-Dots and crossbars at the midpoint (i, f, t, etc.)
Please look at the examples below of what we would grade as O, S, or N.
Math Test Corrections-
We know that our 1st grade math is a big step up from Kindergarten and has been challenging for some students, but the kids are learning and making absolutely fantastic progress!
Knowing that the transition will take a bit of time, students have the option to complete test corrections for any grade that falls below 75% on a math test. If your child has scored less than a 75%, we will staple a test correction form onto their test. This lets you know they are eligible for corrections. Students will be able to complete test corrections by reviewing the missed problems and completing the work on a separate piece of paper, showing all of the steps, and getting the correct answer. Newly corrected work will receive half credit, with a maximum score of 75%. Make-ups are not required, but are a great tool to increase understanding, as well as earn a few missed points back on the grade for that test. Test corrections must be submitted within two days of receiving the test back.
Example: A student scores a 50% on their test and receives the test correction form. The student will do test corrections for the whole test (with help is totally okay!) and re-submit. If fixed correctly students' new grade for the test will be a 75%.
