“Baby Fitz was born without an immune system. His treatment offers hope for curing rare diseases.”

By Gabby Geracitano

On December 26, 2021, Karen Weintraub published this article on Apple News. This article was about a baby named Fitz who was born without a functioning immune system. This condition is known as “bubble boy disease.” Usually, babies with bubble boy disease don’t make it past toddlerhood. Common germs and colds can be fatal to babies who have this condition. Surprisingly and thankfully, Fitz seemed to be cured even before his first sniffle. Fitz became one of the first babies ever diagnosed with this condition within a few days of being born. He also had experimental therapy, which seems to have worked several months later.

His story provides a glimpse of hope into the future for rare inherited diseases. (This is just a pretty quick summary of the article, so feel free to look up more information about any of the topics discussed in this summary.)

Betty White Challenge

Betty White died on December 31, 2021, 2 weeks before her 100th birthday. Unknown to most, Ms. White loved animals. Known for her funny roles in movies, people around the world started the Betty White Challenge. Through social media the challenge spread, asking people to donate $5 to an animal charity of their choice. Even though this event was on January 17, you can still take part and donate today.

How to Actually Keep Your New Year’s Resolution(s)

By Gabby Geracitano

Since I did an article on some New Year’s resolutions, I might as well do one on how to keep them. Here are 2 crucial tips:

  1. Be consistent! Say that you want to journal, make sure to do it every morning, night, or whenever you prefer.

  2. Actually, stick to ones that will benefit you

These tips are crucial because they can actually help you follow through with your New Year’s resolutions.

Hanukkah

By Gianna Gigliello

Everyone is excited about the holiday season this year including me, Hanukkah is early this year, that's what I’m excited about.

Hanukkah is every year usually in November or December, there are 8 nights of the holiday, it is 8 nights because when the Jewish people were slaves back then they made a candle out of some spare wax when the candle was lit, it lasted 8 nights. Each night of Hanukkah we get out our menorahs and put on a candle and sing the song(I don’t remember the lyrics). After we sing we give each other gifts.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday so most people who celebrate Hanukkah do celebrate Christmas but some don’t.

Hanukkah Starts November 28th at sundown and ends December 6th!

Women's Rally

By: Liliana Jones

On October 2, 2021, there was a women's rally. A rally is not a march. Instead, it is a gathering with speakers protesting something. The rally was held in front of the capitol building in Albany NY. Speakers at the rally were New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Congressman Paul Tonko, Kristen Dart, Political Director of Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts, Chelly Hegan, President/CEO of Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, El Evelyn, WSW Program Coordinator from In Our Own Voices, Luz Marquez Benbow, Activist, Jasmin Ahmed, Youth Health Promoter from UHPP, Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Assemblymember Didi Barrett. The crowd was like seeing a flood of pink. The women's rights supporters were there trying to protect reproductive rights. This was because of the Texas law that was passed saying women can’t get an abortion after six weeks. The majority of the time women who are pregnant at six weeks don't even know that they are. Supporters at the rally would put their signs up after someone spoke or if they agreed with what the person was saying. This rally was just one of many in America. The biggest one was in Washington D.C. All genders were there.
