Farm Education
Kalapuya High School students have the opportunity to work on the Bethel Farm, which is located behind their school. They receive extensive training in organic agriculture, fruit orchard management, greenhouse horticulture, and beekeeping. Our agriculture classes build on the biology and ecology concepts students learn in school. We offer a hands-on, practical application of science concepts as well as training in many areas of sustainable agriculture.
Sustainable Agriculture Cohort - This 12-week comprehensive sustainable agriculture course is offered in the fall, winter and spring terms. Through the completion of this course, students earn a Jr. Master Gardener Certificate through Oregon State University.
Students learn core agricultural skills, including composting, soil health, propagation, seed saving, pollination, irrigation, greenhouse management, landscape design, beekeeping and much more. Students who participate in this class leave feeling empowered to pursue a career in an agricultural field or start their own gardens or farms.
In addition to the core skills classes, students receive a rotating set of classes that are offered in response to the seasonal changes and current farm projects.
Students receive training and study support in class to obtain their Oregon Food Handler’s Card and do a “healthy shopping on a budget” class at a local grocery store as part of the program.
Kalapuya High School Sustainable Agriculture Cohort students also get the opportunity to participate in experiential field trips to local farms throughout the school year.
