Strong, effective leadership is critical for the successful implementation of RtIi. In order to establish an effective RtIi system, leaders and leadership teams must create and maintain several critical practices. Among these are establishing standards of practice, effectively allocating resources, installing effective communication loops, and creating leadership team structures. “Leadership” is not a person but people engaging in different kinds of leadership behavior as needed, to establish effective programs and sustain them as circumstances change over time. Therefore, it’s imperative for all leaders from the superintendent and district office members to principals and teachers to be aligned and steadfast in their beliefs and actions in order to increase student opportunities and achievement.
Standards of Practice are a set of expectations to ensure that all schools have a clear understanding and alignment of instructional and behavior support practices, along with meeting structures. The standards of practice will be supported and monitored by District and School Leadership to improve and refine practices. Standards of practice ensure that schools are using research-based curricula and practices, including Restorative and Resilience Building Practices. As students spend most of their school day in the general education classroom, high quality core instruction and creation of welcoming and supportive classroom communities are the most critical components of increasing students’ academic outcomes, along with building strong family partnerships.
