COURSE SELECTION

Each year in March, the school counselors will be meeting with all rising 9, 10, 11, 12 students.  Grade 10-12 will meet with their school counselors in their English class over the first two weeks of March.  These students will begin their graduation progress/4 year plan during this time as well.  This plan can be found on the Student School Counseling google classroom.  The rising 9th graders will meet individually with their school counselor during the third week of March.

Course override form

Students should review their course recommendations on PowerSchool.  IF a student feels that they would like to increase their rigor and take a course they were not recommended for,  a Course Override Form must be submitted by the student's parent.

If a student and his/her family wishes to override a teacher’s recommendation, the student must discuss this request with the recommending teacher and complete the Override Form. Consider carefully not just the difficulty of the course being waived into, but the volume of work for the course load overall.  Many of the advanced classes have required summer course work.   For further details on course descriptions, refer to the 2024-25 Bethel High School Program of Studies.

Potential Issues that may Result from overriding a teachers' course recommendation are:

- If a level change is made after the first 6 weeks of the course, a withdrawal pass or withdrawal fail will be noted on the student's transcript.

 - Should the student experience difficulty in meeting the demands of the new placement, s/he must make use of appropriate resources:  confer with teacher, seek extra help, visit the support centers, or seek peer tutoring.

 - The pace or content of the course may be too rigorous and inappropriate, and the level of extra help from the teacher will not exceed that for other students in the advanced class.

- It may be impossible to change levels due to schedule or space limitations; the student may have to cope with an inappropriate course for the entire year.

- The student may not acquire the learning and grade that s/he considers satisfactory despite their best efforts.

-  If a level change is possible to be made, the grade from the original class level will transfer to the new class level.

-  Request to drop class due to not completing summer work will not be approved.
