Science Opportunities

Bethel High School strives to provide additional opportunities for students to engage in science outside of the classroom. As the competition for acceptance into colleges increases, science extension opportunities provide a great way for students to separate themselves from the crowd. Here are some of the opportunities that are available to Bethel High Students on a yearly basis:

Extra/Co-curricular Activities

Science National Honor Society:

The Science National Honor Society (SNHS) encourages participation in science. SNHS members learn more about science, communicate with working scientists, and perform outreach to aid the Bethel community with its comprehension and appreciation of science. Students are required to submit an application for acceptance to the SNHS in the fall. For more information please contact Mr. Cox (coxg@bethel.k12.ct.us) or Ms. Leary (learym@bethel.k12.ct.us).

Bethel Climate Action Committee:

The Bethel Climate Action Committee is a group of students that represent the concerns the youth of today have towards sustaining our planet. Our mission is to provide students with a sense of drive when dealing with a large scale problem such as climate change. As the Bethel Climate Action Committee, our focus will be to reduce the carbon emissions output by our school and community. The BCAC will provide participating students with leadership opportunities, as well as community service hours. Participating students will be expected to collaborate with one another and spread awareness amongst their peers, in order to make BHS a more sustainable environment. For more information please contact Mr. Turek (turekr@bethel.k12.ct.us).

Connecticut Junior Sciences & Humanities Symposium (CJSHS):

BHS students with a strong desire to pursue a career in the sciences should strongly consider registering for BHS's Science Research Course. This course allows students to pursue independent research in a scientific field of his or her choice under the guidance of a mentor teacher. Students that enroll in the Science Research Course are invited to attend CJSHS to generate ideas and learn what other students in the state are doing for research. Students that are enrolled in Science Research will also attend CJSHS in order to present his or her research. Interested freshman, sophomores or juniors considering registering for Science Research should see Mr. Turek in the winter for additional information. Students who are not enrolled in the Science Research Course can independently register and compete at the CJSHS.
