Culinary Arts I 12 .5 Credit

Course Description: In this course you will develop foundational skills necessary to prepare nutritious meals at home. Topics of study will include nutrition, food preparation, consumer decisions, and current global issues concerning food production.

This is an introductory foods laboratory cooperative learning experience. Students become acquainted with kitchen facilities, utensils, food preparation terms and techniques, as well as the consumer and nutritional aspects of foods. This course is the prerequisite for Culinary Arts II and Baking .


Culinary Arts II 22 .5 Credit

Prerequisite: A grade of 80 or better in Culinary Arts I

Open to: 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course offers students additional and expanded experiences in the nutritional and consumer aspects of foods and their preparation. Students are expected to have basic skills in measuring, food preparation, and kitchen safety. Cooperative laboratory experiences involve the preparation of various food products using a variety of kitchen equipment and small appliances.


Baking .5 Credit

Prerequisite: A grade of 80 or better in Culinary Arts I

Open to: ALL

Course Description: In this course, students will learn about baking and pastry, with an emphasis on baking techniques, yeast bread and rolls, quick breads, pastry, and desserts. Students will also be provided the opportunity to evaluate career options offered in the baking industry.


Child Development I (Early Childhood Education) .5 Credit

904006 One Semester

Prerequisite: None

Open to: ALL

Course Description: This semester course is recommended for students who are considering a career involving children, or who have a sincere interest in learning about children. During the course, students learn about children’s growth and development and characteristics of preschool-age and early elementary school children. Students also have the opportunity to work directly with children providing them with real world experience. Through participation in this program students apply their knowledge and gain first-hand experience working with young children.


Child Development II (Family Life Education) .5 Credit

904007 One Semester

Prerequisite: A grade of 80 or better in Child Development 12

Open to: 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course is designed to provide new experiences for students who have successfully completed Child Development 12. Students will still be in contact with preschool and early elementary age children and will be completing lesson plans. The content consists of family planning, prenatal health, infant care, parenting styles, and the family life cycle. Recommended for students on an education pathway or students interested in a career based in psychology, counseling or the health field.


Individual and Family Development 1 Credit

904100 Full Year

Prerequisite: A grade of 80 or better in Child Development 12 and Child Development 22

Open to: 11, 12

Course Description: This college level course is highly recommended for students who are preparing for careers in education, human services, psychology, family studies, social work and health occupations. Admission is based on academic performance, attendance, and citizenship. It is an introduction to the general study of human development from conception through old age. The course examines physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth across the lifespan, emphasizing that development results from the interdependence of these areas at every stage. The course requires 40 hours beyond the classroom which could include an internship/extended learning experience. Students will have the opportunity to apply for UCONN college credit in the UCONN Early College Experience (ECE) program and should refer to the UCONN ECE program materials for the registration process and related fees.
