Mrs Janzen and Mrs Yoder worked together to help Kindergarteners create these colorful Self-Portraits! The students are learning about "myself, my family, and my community" in social studies with Mrs Yoder, so a self-portrait is a great art project to tie in their learning about themselves. With Mrs Yoder, they worked on how to cut paper in half using a straight line. With Mrs Janzen they talked about "what makes me, me?" and drew these adorable and memorable pictures of themselves.

What we learned:
We read the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. It’s the story of 3 mice who discover the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and learn that when they mix two primary colors at a time they get a secondary color (orange, green, purple).
How to draw a mouse holding a paintbrush three times.
How to use paint in the art room for the first time (they followed instructions so well!)
How to mix primary colors to get secondary colors:
Blue + Yellow = Green!
Yellow + Red = Orange!
Red + Blue = Purple!

Our Kindergarten artists learned how to draw tulips by first touching them, then observing them on their table, and then drawing them step by step using simple shapes and lines. We also focused on making the vase look 3-dimensional with a "squishy oval" at the top. This was our last artwork of the year and I'm so proud at how much these artists have grown!

There’s a Ghost in Kindergarten!
The Kindergarteners read the book There’s a Ghost in this House, by Oliver Jeffers and looked for the ghosts hidden on each page. Then Kindergarten artists learned how to draw a ghost in 4 simple steps.
After drawing their first ghost, they got to draw other ghosts, pumpkins and other details of their choosing.
