8th grade
8th graders learned about Italian artist Antonio Colomboni who creates portraits with a mix of photography and bright, flat color designs in a collage style. They tried out this style by tracing our own portrait and filling it with colorful designs. That drawing was then ripped up and added to the photograph to create the look of a self-portrait that is “split” into two styles. The last part of the project was to trace their portrait one more time and learn how to add pencil shading to their faces around the collage pieces.

7th graders took time to draw shoes from different viewpoints using the contour line method which focuses on the lines of an object, not shading. Then they chose a shoe to draw in detail. They “fractured” the shoe by drawing 5 lines and then added shading by rotating between drawing pencils and colored pencils.

Lego Drawings
7th grade
The 7th graders learned how to draw 3-dimensional blocks and cylinders and then they made their own Lego still life to draw. We worked on how to shade 3-dimensional blocks with highlights, shadows and cast shadows, as well as how to blend the different values smoothly.

Positive/Negative Space Plant Drawings
8th grade
In learning about positive and negative space in artwork, 8th graders first looked at artwork by various artists that use negative space in interesting ways. Then, they observed and practiced drawing and shading plants at their tables. Their final plant drawing was split in half: one half focused on positive and negative space by using sharpie markers; the other half focused on realistic shading with drawing pencils.
