Inspired by Peter H. Reynold's book "The Dot."
Bethany students in grades K-6 create a different dot each year for International Dot Day. This year we tried out our 3D art skills by creating paper sculptures! On Day 1, students created their own painted paper. Kindergarteners and 1st graders used ink daubers and students in grades 2-6 experimented with tempera paint, texture combs, texture rollers and cardboard squares (no paint brushes!). It was so fun to watch the endless ways these students can mix colors and create new and interesting textures. Then, on Day 2 they really blew me away! They were taught some basic building techniques and then left to create their Dot sculpture how they wanted it to look. It was amazing to watch as they came up with no less than a dozen different building ideas that I hadn’t even thought of. Every class got the same instructions and yet each dot is unique, just like each student.
