Smooshed Self-Portraits

Intro to 2D Art

High school art students learned how to create a rubbed charcoal drawing for this unusual (and funny) self-portrait. They rubbed charcoal evenly over a piece of paper to create the mid-tone and then added highlights with a kneaded eraser or white charcoal pencil and darks with a charcoal pencil. If you’re wondering why their faces and hands look so smashed… this was just some good old-fashioned fun with a copier machine.

Break the Border Watercolor Painting

Students in Painting class learned how to use tube watercolor paints and also learned 9 different watercolor techniques using things like salt, rubbing alcohol, plastic wrap and oil pastel.

The focus for this painting was to create a composition of their choice, and have one (or more) of those images “breaking the border” of their painting. They had the option of using pencil or sharpie to add texture and details.

Drawing I: Expressive Figures and Pen & Collage Portraits

Earlier this semester, Drawing I students reviewed various pen techniques and created a portrait of someone they know using the techniques of their choice. They worked from a photo they took themselves and then created some kind of collage background to help enhance the portrait. Then we moved on to figure drawing for a few days and then the challenge for their next project was to choose a feeling or emotion they wanted to express and then find a way to convey that emotion with a human figure. It was really fun to see the results! I'm continually amazed by these artists.
