School Refusal
This manual is intended to guide Bernards Township School District as we implement the Tiered Approach of Intervention for Problmeatic School Absenteeism.
Students chronically absent from school not only impact the individual student’s future but also negatively impact other students in the classroom (Gottfried, 2017). Identifying students with emerging school refusal is vital in elementary school, where schools adopt early interventions on a school-wide level to apply multiply levels of support (Kearney, 2019).
School refusal is a complex issue facing many school districts, parents, and therapists. Many factors contribute to chronic absenteeism. Interventions need to be individualized to meet the needs of the student. However, a student must first be identified to provide individual support.
