Accelerated Algebra 1 Mandatory Summer Assignment

Dear Accelerated Algebra I Student,

Welcome to the exciting world of Accelerated Algebra I! With this opportunity comes an increased expectation and responsibility for your academic learning in mathematics. In order to prepare for Accelerated Algebra I, you are required to complete this summer assignment before the first day of school. This material is a review of a number of concepts learned in Accelerated Middle School Math. If, however, there is any concept with which you are unfamiliar, feel free to consult the online textbooks for both Sixth Grade and Seventh Grade. Proficiency in this material is important for a successful start in the Accelerated Algebra I course.

Please print the assignment from the link below. You may complete each problem on the actual assignment, but feel free to attach additional pages if you need more space for any problems. Make sure to show all your work. Do your work in pencil. Staple all of your work together in order before you come to class. This is due the first day of school in Accelerated Algebra I class. It will be collected on the first day and checked for thorough completion.

Below the assignment is a solution key. This provides worked out solutions for each problem that model the expected level of detail. Before the first day of school, please check your work thoroughly and correct any mistakes as necessary. If you still have questions on any particular problem, please circle that problem and be prepared to ask about it during the first week of school. Self-assessment will be a critical component of this course throughout the year. Solution keys will be provided for homework assignments. Students will be expected to check answers and come to class with any questions they may have.

Students will be given an ungraded assessment during the first week of school that is based on the skills and concepts from the summer assignment. The assessment will also provide an opportunity for students to reflect upon their own learning of prior learned skills and whether the current placement is appropriate for their acquisition of acquiring mathematical content.

Also, please understand that this assignment is considered to be the minimum you should do in order to prepare for the course. It is also suggested and strongly encouraged to review the Seventh Grade Mathematics textbook (Red, accelerated version) to ensure a strong foundation in mathematics. Students may wish to complete some of the chapter review problems in the Seventh Grade Mathematics book this summer in preparation for the upcoming year.

Take this assignment seriously and do your best. An exciting year is planned for you, and you will be better prepared for the year if you work diligently this summer. Enjoy your summer!
