I am so proud to celebrate my former kindergarten partner teacher, Lori Abney, who recently presented at the Alaska Society for Technology in Education (ASTE) Conference! When I taught kindergarten, Lori and I worked side by side, and even then her dedication, creativity, and commitment to students were unmatched. At ASTE, she shared the incredible work she has done compiling digital platforms that align with the Science of Reading—tools that have truly made a difference for her young learners. She has organized her findings into a Padlet full of practical, effective resources. Her passion for literacy and innovation continues to inspire, and I couldn’t be more proud of the impact she is making! https://bit.ly/3NiGEYr

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally funded nutrition initiative that provides meals to students across the United States. For 60 years, this program has supported student health and academic success.
The School Breakfast Program serves an impressive 15 million meals each school day. These meals are carefully designed to provide more nutritious options compared to typical home or on-the-go meals. By offering balanced and healthy breakfast choices, the program helps students start their day with the right fuel for learning.
Students who regularly eat breakfast experience significant advantages in their academic and personal development. Consistent breakfast consumption helps students stay more focused and attend school more regularly. Research has shown that these students perform better in critical academic areas such as reading, math, and standardized testing.
The upcoming year's theme transforms breakfast from a routine meal into an exciting adventure. This innovative approach aims to encourage student participation, highlight the importance of nutrition, and celebrate the dedicated school nutrition professionals who make these meals possible.
Breakfast is far more than just a morning meal. It represents an opportunity to provide students with essential energy, support their academic success, and give them the strength to tackle daily challenges. By recognizing breakfast as a critical component of student well-being, schools can help students reach their full potential.
National School Breakfast Week serves multiple important goals. The primary objectives include increasing breakfast program participation, raising awareness about nutrition, and recognizing the critical role that school meal programs play in supporting student health and academic achievement.
Here’s a variety of creative, meaningful, and age-appropriate ideas for classrooms to celebrate Acts of Kindness Week:
Create a bulletin board or a “Kindness Tree.”
Students write acts of kindness they did or witnessed on paper leaves or hearts and add them to the display.
This can be updated daily to show a growing culture of kindness.
Each student writes a compliment or kind note to another classmate.
Link them together to form a paper chain that can hang in the classroom as a visual representation of kindness.
Students make cards or notes to staff members, other classes, or community members (like local hospitals or senior centers).
Encourage specific messages like, “I appreciate you because…” or “You make our school better by…”
Give students a checklist of small acts to complete during the week:
Hold the door open for someone.
Help a friend with a task.
Share a positive word with someone new.
Track accomplishments with stickers or a classroom chart.
Students write down something they are grateful for or a kind act they noticed.
At the end of the week, read them aloud to celebrate the collective kindness.
Read books or watch short videos about kindness and discuss ways students can apply the lessons in real life.
Have students act out scenarios showing how to respond with kindness in different situations:
Including someone who’s alone
Apologizing sincerely
Standing up for someone being treated unfairly
Erika will be back with SAVVAS for Math professional development on February 23–24. The schedule is posted to the left. Please come prepared with questions, concerns, and celebrations—especially anything you tried or learned during our last PD. This is a great chance to reflect, refine, and build on what’s already working!
