Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) oversee the administration of the course, and they also play other key roles in its ongoing development. Some of their responsibilities include: helping design and prepare the cases for problem based learning (PBL), maintaining all records for attendance and grading, and creating quizzes and other evaluation tools.
The course’s discussion sections are led by Student Scholars (SSs), undergraduate students who have taken the course and wish to participate as facilitators. The GSIs mentor the SSs, and they are responsible for PH 196, the pedagogy course required for the SSs. As a result, PH 101 provides GSIs with opportunities to develop teaching and mentoring skills as well as independence.
GSIs also support each other. Each GSI serves for two semesters, overlapping with other GSIs in order to provide continuity.
