General Information
Goals: 1. To Learn; 2. To have fun; 3. To feel safe.
Basic multiplication facts are essential for a 5th grader's success. They must have up through the 10's memorized to complete 100 questions in less than 5 minutes. This is the single greatest skill you can help your child with for them to achieve success. There are many ways to practice from Apps to online sites to just flashcards.
Homework is assigned daily. It is extremely important that your child completes daily work. Homework should take about 15 minutes.
Students must show any calculation work on paper, especially for online assignments. NO WORK = NO GRADE.
Students at this age still need parents to check homework and study with them.
If you help your child with homework and show a different method (though I do focus on old school or traditional methods), that is fine with me provided they understand and can show the work. There is always more than one way to solve a problem.
Please avoid saying that you weren't good at math or you don't understand math today. Try to say something like, "I'm just a little out of practice." I teach it the same as how it was taught 30 years ago. We're just getting better at presenting it in different ways for different learners. There are some helpful video links on the next page.
